Based on the game Victoria: An Empire Under The Sun. I've written a short overview of each ideology though obviously it varies alot by country.

Liberal - Supports laissez-faire and free trade at the start of the game, as well as usually being anti-military and pro-immigration. Strongly supports secularism/pluralism. Later on, drops laissez-faire and moves towards a more social liberal welfare state with the economy still being privately owned.

Anarcho-Liberal - Pissed off liberals. Laissez-faire, free trade, secularism etc.

Conservative - Supports interventionism and protectionism at start of game. Quite anti-immigration and pro-military. Usually support moralism. Later on drops interventionism and goes laissez-faire.

Reactionary - Pissed off conservatives. Support a strong state in the economy and lots of protectionism as well as moralism, jingoism and very anti-immigration policies (sometimes even to the point of supporting slavery etc.)

Socialist - Supports state capitalism (strong role for government in economy) and protectionism (usually). Pro-secularism, usually anti-military or pacifist and pro-immigration.

Communist - Pissed off socialists. Support planned economy and protectionism. Pro state atheism and pro-immigration. Stance on military can vary.

Fascist - Pissed off generally. Support state capitalism and protectionism, moralism, jingoism and lots of anti-immigration policies.

Liberal or Socialist, depending on the country, though I really would've been unhappy in the political system of the time... being Free Trade but Interventionist was not at all a comfortable situation to be in Tongue

I suppose 'Anarcho-Liberal', though that was a strange choice of label on Paradox's part.

I thought so too. I thought 'Radical' might have been a better one.

Didn't the Liberal party support free trade until the bloody end?

Not to mention, overt moralism was a feature of every party, except the Marxist-inspired ones. I can't imagine too many posters here who would be comfortable with the evangelical cast of 19th century Liberal politics.

This is asking about ideologies, not parties. The individual ideologies and their parties are different in every country.

I think Winston plays the U.K. a lot, but I never play it, so obviously, as he says, there are variances in the definitions of these.

OK. I thought that was specifically about Britain.

You would definitely not be Liberal in Victoria terminology.

Liberal parties in many countries remain laissez-faire to the end, such as in France, Germany, Austria, Russia, USA, etc.

Though thank you, I had been wondering where I'd heard that line before.

In Britain yeah. It was pretty much the only thing which really defined the Liberal Party here as a matter of fact. But once it moved towards social liberalism, it alienated the business community who instead went over to the increasingly pro-free market Conservatives. So that basically left the Liberals as the party of the Nonconformists. Women's suffrage pretty much put the last nail in the coffin for the Liberals as a major party, as most women were staunch Conservatives (and still are actually)
