I would much rather be deaf. I think walking down the street would be much more difficult if I could not see than if it would be if I could not hear.

Rather be deaf....Sight, IMO, simply gives you a lot more.

Well, yeah obviously I wouldn't want to go blind either (though I'm fairly shortsighted as is Tongue ). It was mostly in response to some remark along the lines of "I'd go mad if..." in that other thread. I'd also be rather blind than lose the use of both legs.

What if this were true?

Blind adults retain their powers of memory and concentration, while deaf adults eventually face mental disintegration ("you no longer hear yourself think").

Deaf of course. My mother went blind in the 30's.  It was hell.  Can you imagine what it must be like not to be able to read anymore for an educated person? Or find anything? Or cook?  And in her case, she was unable given her age, to adequately compensate.

It depends on how I became either deaf or blind.

Being elderly and blind from chronic UV radiation damage, or elderly and deaf from constant noise exposure and old age, would be less debilitating than, say, being either blind or deaf now as a thirty year old.

If I had to choose which way to go: Blind, if I had friends. Deaf if I lived alone.

You, my dear, shall be deprived of your sense of touch.

Now that would be the worst sense to lose, I suppose.

The not being able to read anymore would be terrible, but the rest would seem to be ameliorated by servants.

Considering most of my hobbies are visually oriented, deaf. I'd miss sound of course, but at least I'd still be able to play video games.

This is a really tough question.  I was blessed with 20/13 vision so I suppose I'd choose deafness especially since deaf people can still communicate by reading lips and such.

But if I had to choose either, I'd insist on being born with either rather than developing either during my life.  That's just tragic.. even for Glenn Beck.

That's true enough. If you're born blind or deaf, I don't suppose you know any different.
