What are yours?

One of mine is spelling and pronunciation of language.  I hate it when people use then and than incorrectly.  Their, they're, and there is another one.  I also hate it when people spell by sound.  I'll just put some examples below:

Used to:  "use to"
Supposedly:  Supposevly
Congratulations or Congrats:  Congradulations, congrads

There are many more.

I also get annoyed by a lot of marketing trends like.  putting.  a.  period.  after.  every.  word.

My ex-ex girlfriend used to write "congradulations" - although she sucked at spelling, grammar, English (honestly, she wasn't really that great in school in general) - it drove me nuts.

Do people seriously write like that?  I don't think I could have Inks fortitude in staying in that kind of relationship.

SPELLING ERRORS ARE ONLY OKAY IF THEY ARE INTENTIONAL, SRSLY

The  misuse of advice and advise drives me nuts. It is very common for folks to use advise as a noun. I have given up on my war against irregardless (which I assume arose from conflating irrespective with regardless), which now sadly is actually a word in the dictionary, albeit a "non-preferred" variation on regardless. And even I sometimes misuse lay and lie, but don't  tell anyone. I am more tolerant of the use of mute for moot, since the use of moot is not that common outside of the legal world. And oh, then we have the abyss of effect and affect, which I must note, are often misused by many posters on this very site!  Tongue

I also hate it when people spell by sound.

I think it's a positive development, and hope that one day my descendants will inherit a writing system which actually somewhat matches what English sounds like, at least a little bit.

Coming to grips with the 14/15 vowels of English will be a bit of a challenge, but I have faith.

The spelling and grammatical errors are given. I'm amazed that so many people don't have a basic grasp on their own language, even to the point where they're swapping out "here" for "hear" and "for all intents and purposes" for "for all intensive purposes." Gahhhhh!!

Other than that, I've got a few other major pet peeves:

 - Babies in church / at weddings / in public places -- why is it that young parents don't realize that their f***ing bawling baby is a distraction to everyone else? Either don't bring them to events such as those previously mentioned, or have enough of a brain to realize that when they start screaming at the top of their lungs, your persistent "shhhhhh, shh shh shh shh" isn't going to do sh**t and you need to take them out of said venue.

 - Sentence finishers -- some people are just so excited about what they're going to say next that they can't wait for you to finish talking ... so they finish your sentences for you! I'm sometimes a slow and deliberate speaker, so people who interrupt me are at the top of the pet-peeves list.

 - Smackers -- close your damn mouth when you eat, you Neanderthals. Nobody wants to hear you chomp on your food.

"approval rating" vs. "favorability rating"
"Hutchison" vs. "Hutchinson"
"Giuliani" vs. "Guiliani"
"Tsongas" vs. "Tsonagus" (this one's specific to gporter)

Also, the common typo of "you" instead of "your".  For instance, "Get you books and go to class" or "Go to you house".

Here's one that I do that drives people crazy.  When I'm talking, if I feel I've said everything I need to say to get the point home, I just stop midsentence.

EDIT:  As for my pet peeve, any form of the word "lulz" is a good starting point, as are "moar" and several other 4chanisms.

My big ones all come from my job. Everyone I work with is also driven crazy by these:

-Referring to anything not sold by an insurance company as "insurance".
-Talking about the "iPhone 4G".
-Referring to an iPod Touch as an "iTouch".
-Referring to anything besides Microsoft Outlook software as "Outlook".

Non-job related:

-Texting during movies. It is just as annoying as talking on the phone, not to mention it is completely unnecessary. You can't wait 90 minutes to two hours to send a text?
-Anything related to choosing a VP candidate to "deliver" a state or the "neighboring state advantage". Hands down the most annoying part of a presidential campaign is choosing the VP candidate.

The words gubernatorial, veep, and fiance.

Parents who...

-Get their very young girl a tan and/or dye her hair blonde.

-Name a girl after a flower or personality trait, like Rose or Chastity.

-Name a kid after one of the parents.

-Put a diminutive form of a name on the birth certificate.  Like mine did.

-Treat babies like pets.

People who obsess over their "family name."

People who obsess over tradition, in general.

People, in general.

What is your problem with that? Like, James Brown Jr. and such? I wouldn't give my child my name, but still, why?

Or do you mean one of their parents?

As far as spelling and grammar goes, in Sweden we have a problem with "särskrivningar" or to non Swedes, people writing words as two or three words when it's only suppouse to be one.

Hand duk instead of handduk, Arbets förmedlingen instead of Arbetsförmedlingen,  kyckling soppa instead of kycklingsoppa. To compare to English, it'd be like some one writing "how ever" and not however.

When it comes to life in general...

Teens who don't give up their seat to old, injured, or pregnant people on the bus or train. Selfish bitches.

People who always have to ask gay people wether they're the man or the woman in the relationship. We're both men you bloddy tosser, that's what the whole controversy is about.

Those idiots you sometimes see that will smoke next to their small children and even blow the smoke on the kids. Like one guy I saw at the train station who had a baby in a pram, and was smoking right into the pram. Angry Sorry but those parents should be castrated and beaten with a stick.
