With the deepest sadness for all those who died, and understanding that all deaths are terrible and it's a shame that anyone would have to die this way, I'm not sure I can really understand you guys' reaction here.

He died doing what he enjoyed; I can't think of a better way to die.

RIP Ted Stevens.

RIP to a great man and American hero, who was often misunderstood and persecuted because of it.

I disliked Mr. Stevens, but this is a tragic event and my prayers are out there for him, his family, the other victims, and their families as well.

I think a good rule of thumb on whether you're crossing a line would be that if you are comfortable with someone of the opposite party saying exactly the same thing you said but with reference to Sen. Kennedy, you are on solid ground.

RIP Sen. Stevens. I disagreed with him as a politician, but I regret his death and am sorry for his family to suffer his loss in this way.

I suppose that, when you think about it, planes are technically a series of tubes.

Not that a plane is a big truck.

According to news reports,

Former NASA Chief Sean O'Keefe has survived along with his son.

Btw to add a note, I went to middle school with his son.

Not to be crass, but would it have even made the news if he'd died of a heart attack or something instead?

Yes, because of who he was. But we might be spared the bizarre mawkishness.

But the unfortunate death of a 'public figure' is one of the few excuses we have to be sentimental out in the open these days.

The man was no great American historical figure. It's not like he was some sort of hero or man with great accomplishment. I don't really get why you're all treating him as if he was one of the most important Senators ever to grace the Senate with his presence (changing avatars now to remember some incredibly unintelligent routinely misinformed criminal geezer from Alaska? He's no Kennedy or Byrd, people), because even though I hate death, I gotta be the one to say it; Senator Stevens wasn't really 'all that'.

Not to be too much of a hack on such a sad day, but I have to say this.

I hardly think Kennedy (I assume you are refering to Ted) was any better.

Ted Kennedy had Chappaquiddick.

The only difference between the two men is that Ted was elevated to sainthood by the liberals.

And the fact that Kennedy was the man responsible for many important bills while Stevens's greatest accomplishment was the amount of pork he funneled to Alaska.

The only difference between the two men is that Ted was elevated to sainthood by the liberals.

A difference between Kennedy and Stevens is that Kennedy was a tremendous influence in the Senate who produced many pieces of signature legislation from the 1960s to the 2000s. Many people disagree with that influence or think it was bad for the country, but for better or for worse, he was a major factor in what our government has become. Some people also think Chappaquiddick was more important than all of that, and that's a debate for another day.

Stevens, by comparison, didn't have many comparable legislative accomplishments. The best comparison for his accomplishments, to be generous, would be Sen. Byrd. Longevity and intense devotion to financial support of his home state.

Edit: px said it much more succintly (and less senatorially!) than I did.

I was sorry to hear this.  While I hated his politics, he was good to the people of Alaska.  RIP.

R.I.P. Senator, and those that were lost.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and families that have been affected.

Do I get the money back that he funneled to Alaska?

No?

Screw him. The guy was a dick.

(And I don't use the word lightly. If freaking Bono died in a plane crash, I'd post something mawkish too).

I have a personal rule to abstain with some kind of comments and calling names for at least few days after a certain person dies. Whether it was Ted Kennedy, Ted Stevens, Robert Byrd, Jesse Helms, Jerry Falwell etc. etc.

If you can't hold on for a moment, you're just lacking a class and personal culture.

Well, wormyguy, you're here not so long but you already lost my respect. Thus, welcome to my, until now, empty ignore list.

Eh, he was a pretty sh** Senator, but I don't think he was that bad of a guy. Certainly better than fascist Jesse Helms, whose death was the sort we could all enjoy. So RIP.

Yes, with Hale Boggs. Remains of the plane were never located and they were postmousthly found "dead" by Congressional resolution.

Heh. I did note 'usual'; I know very little about Bond films Smiley

That's the problem with the British economy these days. No one cares about Exports. (Universal Exports is the company Bond "works" for as a cover.)
