Is this a surprise, or has Richmond County just returned to its Republican roots?  Discuss.

I think it's just returned to its (very) Republican roots.

The 2000 election was a fluke in many ways. New York was one of them.  While I certainly don't think any Republican will win the win state for a while, losing by 25 points probably won't happen either.  18 points is much more realistic because there are just too many naturally Republican areas in upstate New York for this to change "that" much.

Keep in mind that Clinton won Staten Island in 1996.  By 10 points.

Is Staten Island Richmond County?

When you first said Richmond, I was thinking of VA's capital.

Yes.

Manhattan = New York County
Brooklyn = Kings County
Queens = Queens County
Bronx = Bronx County
Staten Island = Richmond County

(Sesame Street "Which of these is not like the others" music plays...)

Staten Island should become a state. They have almost as many voters as Wyoming anyway. Wink

Kerry did better than Gore in Manhattan. The ultimate 9/11 county got more Democratic.

Misleading.  Bush also did better in New York county than 2000.  Nader factor.
You also fail to realize that something like 12-13% of WTC were Manhatten residents.  Bush did much better in the commuting counties.  He didnt lose Nassau and Suffolk by much which was surprising and did a heck of a lot better in NJ

If Republicans can remain competitive in around Long Island and Upstate New York, then ar least state-wide there is hope. Unless this election is an exception, New York Republicans should be pleased.

I would have been even more pleased if we had gotten just 2000 more votes here.  My county(Suffolk) would have turned Bush.  Still, this is a big improvement.

Again, the 9/11 factor.  Most of the WTC workers were commuters from other counties.  A significant number of them also came from Monmouth County, NJ, which made a huge swing to Bush this time around.  Hopefully Pataki or Giuliani will run in 2008 and solidify their bases and continue to swing these close counties their way.

You're in Suffolk?  Where abouts?  Going to be moving out there myself next year.  In total we're bringing 4 more Republican votes ;-)

I'm originally from Suffolk County myself.  Pleased to see it is coming to its senses again.

Long Island Statehood now!

It would be a swing state too.
