If the General Election was held today, who would you most likely vote for in the U.S. Representative, District 1 race?

Walt Minnick - 59.8%
Raul Labrador - 29.6%
Dave Olson - 5.4%
Mike Washburn - 5.2%

Its amazing that Minnick is likely going to make this a safe seat for himself.  In 2010, of all years.

If Republicans cant knock him off in the worst Democratic year since 1894, will they ever?

No kidding. Minnick seems to have somehow made himself into a political tank - and the GOP must be trying to take him out with a political pea shooter, if they're doing this terribly.

Minnick opposes all of that which Obama proposes. The end. I have not thought this seat was really in play, unless and until I saw something to the contrary, and then it would have surprised me, although in this crazy environment, not shocked me.

Plus the GOP guy is a Mormon in the half of the state with a drastically lower Mormon percentage than the other half, and that matter lurks under the surface (annoyance of the influence of a rather exclusive uber-networked club in which one does not belong, which within one's state has a very high visibility), where other concerns are not sufficiently salient.

"All" may be a slight exaggeration.

He's surprisingly pro-gay rights; he voted for both the Matthew Shepard Act and the DADT quasi-repeal (that went nowhere, granted).

He's pro-choice as well, not that it's an issue anymore.

It is sad that since a Republican can't get through a Republican primary in the district, he has to become a Democrat in order to continue being a Republican Smiley

So when are you going to "become a Democrat in order to continue being a Republican"?

Minnick opposes all of that which Obama proposes.
As others have said, he's voted for a bit of it. Which is more than what a Republican from this district would, so it's a net win for the Dems.

Good for Minnick.

This poll is proof that November will truly be 435 individual races, and not just one national poll. Let all Democrats who lose understand this: It didn't have to be so. If Minnick can win, you could have too.

Yeah, all they needed was a self-destructing opponent who loses a primary to a nutcase that can't raise any money and is ignored by the national Republicans.

And is Hispanic.

(Which makes you wonder - are core Republicans, the kind of people who vote in primaries, perhaps a less racist group than Republican leaners? Would hardly be the first sign of that...)

I've long assumed for awhile that that is the case having seen how Republican base voters go gaga over black Republicans. The most racist voters are independents or conservative Democrats.

. . . . or they just don't care about his race, and are willing to support the rather Conservative Minnick over an unknown Republican?

Minnick is probably far more liberally personally than his actual voting record implies. This probably would show more back when the GOP controlled Congress and kept bringing up their silly wedge issue legislation and he'd be voting against abortion restrictions and the gay marriage amendment.

The important thing about Minnick is that if he wins in 2010, he becomes entrenched.  This means that he builds up a strong resume to become the first Democratic Idaho Governor or Senator in a very long time when one of those seats next opens up.

Dude will be 68 in a week or so; he's not headed for a long and fruitful career in Congress. Either way, when the Republicans come up with a decent candidate (which, admittedly, is a challenge for them in this district), he'll probably lose.

He might not, if his vote made a difference. I am not saying that will be the case, I am saying "might."

Minnick's votes, according to wikipedia:

AGAINST the stimulus.
AGAINST cap-and-trade.
AGAINST health care.

FOR Lily Ledbetter.
FOR SCHIP.
FOR HAMP (which sparked the Rick Santelli tea party ironically enough)
FOR the Hates Crimes Bill.
FOR audit the Fed.

I might volunteer for Minnick's campaign. Democrats who complain about him clearly don't understand my state. He's the best we're going to get here in this day and age. It isn't the pre-Clinton years anymore. At least Minnick cares about policy and doesn't believe in repealing the 17th amendment, and moving towards the gold standard.
