March 13, 2012: Today is the Special Election to fill U.S. State Secretary John Kerry's Senate seat. The Republican nominee is Charlie Baker (who defeated Kerry Healey and Bill Weld) and the Democratic nominee is none other than Governor Deval Patrick (who defeated Martha Coakely and Tim Cahill, both of whom were desperate for a political comeback). The election was marked a toss-up. Mitt Romney and Scott Brown campaigned on the side of Baker (although they had both endorsed Healey during the primary) and President Obama campaigned for Patrick. The moment of truth comes near.....

Baker 54.7%
Patrick 44.8%

I know Dallasfan65 and Wormyguy will be happy.

Possible VP picks for Romney (some are not at all likely, but I like throwing out names Smiley )
Former Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia
Governor Bob McDonnell of Virginia
Governor Nikki Haley of South Carolina
Governor Chris Cristie of New Jersey
Former Governor Gary Johnson of New Mexico
Governor Rick Snyder of Michigan Wink
Governor Haley Barbour of Mississippi
Former Governor Jeb Bush of Florida
Senator Marco Rubio of Florida

Nice choice of Chris Cristie! However, I don't think that'll help Romney with the South or the West, and with all the Tea Party voters. Cristie is also 'privately pro-life', however, he doesn't believe in implementing that view on people as Governor. A third party might be able to gain significant traction from that.

Tiny Nitpick:

Huckabee is actually more Liberal than he appears to be. He is more Liberal then Romney on both tax and immigration policy.

Romney/Crist 2012! (Despite my like of the Cain/Huckabbe ticket)

A Republican picking a Democrat and vice-versa is possible. I know that Joe Lieberman was under consideration by John McCain in 2008, and I heard of the possibilities (because of this forum) of Kerry/McCain 2004, and McCain/Clinton 2008. Besides, from what I've hears, Hagel is a moderate on social issues, and I know he's moderate on foreign policy. He's also in Obama's cabinet, so he already has ties to the Obama Administration.

WTF: that would never happen in real life. but for a TL, it's great Wink. congratulations
^

Though I may see this (though out there) if Romney ran on a VERY moderate anti-conservative platform

The real question is how he held the South (for the most part) together even as he was able to get New Hampshire. Of the three states that ordinarily a Republican sould not get: Michigan, New Jersey, and New New Hampshire, New Hampshire si the biggest surprise. How did he hold the West, South, and the East while also being challenged by Cain?

He held the South because of the powerful and popular Southerners (the Bushes, Jim DeMint, Newt Gingrich, Nikki Haley, etc.) supporting him.

He won in Michigan because his family is very popular there and because Michigan-ans were alienated by the Granholm Administration; he won in New Jersey because of Chris Christie; and he won in New Hampshire because New Hampshire is the most likely state up North to flip to the Republican column.

He held the West because Western voters are primarily evangelical Mormons, which is a plus for Romney (due to his Mormonism).

I understand Michigan and New Jersey (I live in one of those states), but how did he manage to hold together enough moderates and enough Cosnervatives?

Note: Michiganians

Good Timeline! Why does Romney keep Hagel, a former opponent, at Secretary of Defense? I like his pick of Joe Lieberman for UN Ambassador. Sad thing about Obama winning the popular vote, though...

I was reading through this and realized that it was an utterly awesome TL, and probably my best (out of the 5 or so I've done - or at least attempted). Do any of you think I should continue it?

Yes, even though you hate Mitt Romney.
