Why did Edwards give up his senate seat?

1.  He thought he would have higher office.

2.  He would have most probably lost for reelection.

He wasn't up for re-election was he? Guess I thought he'd only been in office for 4 years

Edwards was elected in 1998.  His Senate term was up this year, so he had to make a choice between his Presidential/Vice-Presidential run and his Senate run.

His re-elect numbers were pathetic up until he decided to stop spending time in NC and the Senate.

The less he did his job the more popular he was.  This is not a good recipe for success.

It also made him look like a serious candidate who was willing to give up his day job.
