If the point is to mererly put the biggest pounding on the Dems and not ideological, I'd say McCain/Giuliani. You are threading the needle down the center as best as you could. McCain/Powell would be the runner-up ticket.

not sure about the order, but I think gustaf would more likely be sober during a moment of crisis, so Gustaf/Opebo.  Nice balance.  minimal wedge issue problems.

Hah, good idea.  Though the scary thing is, I really don't drink.  Unless you meant psychologically sober.

I admit to having done this.  When I posted about a month ago that I left one blank (Guy Houston/Donna Gerber state assembly race, most negative ever!).  I lied, I actually wrote in Mickey Mouse.  Interestingly, when they showed the totals in the SF chronicle a couple of days later, the total number of votes for Houston and Gerber added up to about half of the total number in this district for other races, so apparently such negative campaigns really do annoy many voters to the point of leaving it blank, or writing in Alfred E. Newman or Mickey or whatever.
