Congrats to him for staying so strong in this environment in a not overwhelmingly Democratic state. It probably helps to have a semi-jokeish opponent though.

From what I can tell, Oregon seems to be a mini-Washington - i.e. it's incredibly polarized. Thus, not many Republicans could have beaten Wyden without some serious luck.

Yeah, I was going to mention that. I find it odd that Smith and Wyden could be best friends after such a very close contest between the two. Then again, Ensign and Reid had a similar situation and ended up working well together.
