Rand Paul: I don't want Washington deciding two mommies is appropriate
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/10/16/rand-paul-two-mommies_n_764571.html

I think Gary Johnson could run reasonably well as an Independent (maybe after getting better known through the GOP primary).  I could see him getting over 10% in a general election.  I would also bet that, like Ross Perot, he would pull evenly from Obama and the GOP.

Getting on the ballot as an Indy in all 50 states requires a lot of signatures, which in practice requires a lot of $.  And waging the kind of national general election campaign that could conceivably get you 10% of the vote also costs a lot of $.

His best bet would be to run in the GOP primaries and get the national media exposure that comes from participating in the nationally televised primary debates, then jumping ship to the Libertarian Party and running for president under the Libertarian banner.  I mean, he still wouldn't win.  But that path gives him the best odds of getting more than 2% of the vote.

Johnson is dedicated to the GOP.

He knows how terrible the Democrats are, and he wishes to keep them in check. I agree with him on that.

I dont understand Paul position. Military is not some state affair, it is a federal affair and Congress have a full right, with the executive, to decide this.

Agreed - the Libertarians have approached him several times before, and the one event he attended he felt an air of "knowing nothing was going to get done." He reiterated this point on Hannity, saying Libertarians approached him to run for President and he refused.

Johnson's also appearing at a press conference in Hollywood on Thursday to speak along with several actors and musicians in favor of Prop 19:

This is, to say the least, not a conventional GOP primary campaign.

Paul wasn't talking about DADT, he was talking about education, and many libertarians believe education should be settled on a state level.

Johnson reiterates in this interview:

http://www.pjtv.com/?cmd=mpg&mpid=113&load=4334

that he's a Republican, and will remain a Republican.  He sounds like a candidate in that interview, and he goes into more detail regarding a political platform.  Basically, it's this:

-Legalize pot.
-Means test Social Security, and create individual retirement accounts.
-Turn Medicaid into block grants for the states.
-Cut defense spending.
-Withdraw from Iraq and Afghanistan immediately (though he does say he thinks the initial decision to invade Afghanistan was justified, it's turned into a nation building exercise).
-Create a guest worker program to deal with illegal immigration.

More clowns in the primary means Palin won't sweep the nutcase vote.

Right, we have the possibility of Romney, Huckabee, Gingrich, and probably a few others to share that vote.

The major Libertarian Conservatives (Ron Paul, Gary Johnson) seem to be loyal to the GOP. Ron Paul ran for President as a Libertarian once, then switched back to the Republican Party. it seems like they've made the concious decision that the Democrats are much worse than the Republicans, though they're not too happy with either.

As for Rand Paul, I don't know if he's a sell out, or if he's just more Neo-Conservative than his dad.

I'm not rooting for the Libertarian Conservatives, but I think it would be a much more interesting primary in 2012 to see Johnson pick up Nevada instead of Romney (though I'm rooting for Romney).
