It's surprising that Amash hasn't hit the 50% mark yet. I read somewhere that MI-03 has a history of electing moderates, thus giving Pat Miles (a moderate) a good chance of winning over Amash (a conservative). The reality is that the district has a history of electing Republicans--with only one Democrat representing the district in the past hundred years. Those Republicans just tend to be a bit more moderate, especially when compared with the far-right conservatives that traditionally represent MI-02--West Michigan's other congressional district.

MI-03 is certainly getting more progressive, with lots of young people moving to Grand Rapids, and Democrats do win races here at the local level. While it may be possible for a moderate Democrat to one day represent MI-03, I just don't see a Democrat winning Gerald Ford's seat in this type of environment. Not this year.
