McCain only won the state by 9. He could, but even in a Dem year, the cards would be stacked against him. Because, yes, this is South Carolina, lol.

Rawl seemed like the perfect candidate for South Carolina. And, if Rawl played his cards right and painted DeMint as a far right-winger (this would work only in a Dem/neutral year in South Carolina) that is more concerned with being kingmaker in other states and not focusing on his job, he could eke out a win.

But he would need to have an african-american running for statewide office (for turnout), at the same time as he is appealing to moderates. Not likely, but possible.

South Carolina is a Republican state.

No, look at the swing map in the presidential results. Notice that the only 5 states to have become more Republican from 2004-2008 (West Virginia, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Louisiana) were all southern? Though South Carolina was not in that category it was very much affected by the same factor that caused those states to swing more Republican - racism.
