Isn't that what happened last time though?  I thought Craddick won the inter-republican vote, but Straus won in the actual vote (where Republicans were supposed to vote unanimously for the Republican-chosen candidate) because of Unanimous Democratic support.

I'm guessing it's a lot easier to plan a coup like that when you only need 1 or 2 Republicans to cast a surprise vote and not around 25.
