Naturally, "southerners" doesn't include black people living in the south.

Of course they don't count, it would ruin the notion that there were absolutely no Democrats in the South.

I posted this in another thread and it describes my feelings towards a good deal of the people who lost.

About southern Blue Dogs, good riddance. The next democratic winning coalition will be a truly liberal one.

That is my hope, but something tells me the Blue Dogs aren't finished yet. A man can, however, dream. Smiley

LOL. Perhaps half the CBC went down in a plane crash last night and I missed it.

It will be much harder to win the House without them...

True, but that's not the whole picture. Imagine if Democrats had narrower losses, a majority of 2, but the survivors included Taylor, Bright, L. Davis, and Jim Marshall. They would all be very reluctant to cast the deciding vote for any Speaker who wasn't one of them, and that's a recipe for disaster. If the majority depends on a certain variety of southern blue dogs, it is no majority at all.

Democrats can certainly take the House with a liberal coalition.  They will still have the majority African American districts in the South and they can replace the Blue Dogs with their gains in the West... a region that will keep on growing.

The Blue Dogs simply don't fit in with this party anymore.  I had always thought the divide was based around social policy, where conservative Southerners would break from the social liberals in Congress.  Their opposition to even the healthcare bill shows that they aren't just social conservatives, they are all out conservatives and don't belong in the party anymore.
