For some reason Paladino is obviously popular in the Buffalo area. I don't know why though since he wasn't an elected official or anything, he was just a guy from Buffalo with a lot of money.

People from Upstate/Western NY think that politicians from NYC don't care about them, so they are inclined to support someone from their region over one from NYC.

Paladino is a well-known Buffalo developer (to Western New Yorkers) who got the tolls taken off the New York State Thruway in the Buffalo area.  He is their Donald Trump.  Andrew Cuomo is a Downstater who doesn't know about or care as much about Buffalo (again, to Western New Yorkers).
