There's an interesting geographical pattern to the change from 2000-2004 in the relative levels of support for the democratic and republican presidential candidates (as defined by the margins of victory by state). Basically, Kerry improved his relative standing in northern New England, Ohio, D.C., and the northern tier of states from Wisconsin to Alaska (the Dakotas, Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon) plus Wyoming, Colorado, and Nevada. Bush improved his relative standing everywhere else. This is a mostly contiguous collection of states in both cases (I'd post a map I made using Dave's electoral vote predictor utility here if I knew how). DAVE: IS IT POSSIBLE TO PRODUCE A MAP OF IMPROVEMENT/DECLINE IN THE RELATIVE STANDING OF THE TWO PARTIES' PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES AT THE COUNTY LEVEL, NATIONWIDE??
