President Goldwater calls Cuomo "a typical liberal candidate." Govenor Cuomo fires back and calls Goldwater "a man for the rich not the poor."  Meanwhile Independent candidate Pat Buchanan states "We can't afford either Goldwater or Cuomo.  Both will grow the government in different ways."

1st Presidential Debate: October 8th, 1992

Jim Lehrer: Hello and welcome to the first Presidential Debate of 1992.  We have with us tonight President Goldwater, Governor Cuomo and Mr. Buchanan.  What's your plan for the economy?  President Goldwater, then Governor Cuomo and finally Mr. Buchanan.

Goldwater: I believe that we need smaller government.  That's the only way our debt will go down.

Cuomo: I believe that we need a stimulus program where you put money into the economy in order for it to work.

Buchanan: As far as the economy goes we need less government.  Back in 1984 and 1988 President Goldwater promised less government however he hasn't really changed much.  Under a Buchanan Presidency we will have low taxes and low unemployment.

Lehrer: What has been your greatest accomplishment been in life?  Governor Cuomo, Mr. Buchanan then President Goldwater.

Buchanan: My greatest accomplishment in life is my family.  They mean more to me than anything in the world.

Buchanan: If elected President I would bring a more conservative government than we've seen in a long time.  The current President isn't that conservative.  He hasn't been that hard on Congress to bring up repeal of such things as healthcare and the 2 cabinet departments.  Thanks.

Goldwater: If I'm re-elected for a 3rd term I'd continue to fight for less government.  I've tried to ask Congress to bring up repeal of healthcare and the Departments of Energy and Education.  However the Democrats are very stubborn and don't want to have less government.

Cuomo: If I'm elected to President I'd represent the poor and middle class compared with the current President.  He hasn't helped out with anyone except the rich.

Presidential Debate: October 22nd, 1992

Jim Lehrer: Hello everyone and welcome to the second, and last, Presidential Debate of 1992.  We have with us tonight President Goldwater, Governor Mario Cuomo and Mr. Pat Buchanan.  First question, a few years ago Congress tried to repeal the Education and Energy Departments.  Is that the right thing to do?  President Goldwater go first, then Governor Cuomo and last Mr. Buchanan.

Goldwater: As far as those 2 Departments I believe that those are states issues.  I don’t believe that the federal government has any business in energy or education.

Cuomo: I don’t think we need to get rid of either the Energy and Education Departments.  This President wants to take us to an anarchist form of government.

Goldwater: I need to jump in here.  I’m not an anarchist.  I just believe that some issues are left for the states.

Buchanan: I think that the President is just saying this because he wants to get re-elected.  He will not fight like I will to get rid of the Departments of Energy and Education.

Lehrer: Alright.  Next question, we move to social issues here.  What is your opinion on abortion?  Governor Cuomo, then Mr. Buchanan and finally President Goldwater.

Cuomo: As far as abortion goes, I feel that a woman should have a right to choose.  Sometimes it even needs to be done as far as a woman’s health.

Goldwater: I believe that it’s not the government’s job to interfere with people’s lives.

Buchanan: I’m the only one up here who will stand up for the unborn.  I’m a right-to-life candidate and I make no compromises when it comes to abortion.

Lehrer: We went to war with Iraq a couple years ago.  That leads me to my last question, what is your plan for the future of this war as well as the future of Iraq?  Mr. Buchanan, then President Goldwater and finally Governor Cuomo?

Buchanan: As far as Iraq I would keep troops there until it becomes a democracy.

Goldwater: I believe that we need to rid the world of Saddam Hussein and his aides.

Cuomo: I believe that diplomacy could work but if that doesn’t work then we may send in more troops.

On December 15th, 1992 the troops in Iraq find Saddam Hussein and bomb his house.  President Goldwater calls this "a great day for democracy in the Middle East."

President-elect Cuomo states "This is great news.  We now are rid of a terrible leader.  We must help form a democratic form of government."  President Goldwater orders more troops in Iraq to keep things from becoming chaos.

On January 3rd, 1993 the 103rd Congress begins.  Ted Kennedy will become Senate Majority Leader.  He says "Over the next few years we will bring legislation forward looking out for the poor and middle class."

On January 15th, 1993 President Goldwater gives his farewell address.  "Americans I want to thank you for serving as your President for the last 8 years.  We've had some good times and some bad times.  Two things we accomplished during my 2 terms are the demolishing of the Soviet Union as well as getting rid of Saddam Hussein.  We did pass some reasonable budgets over the last 8 years that I hope Presidents after me will continue.  Thank you and God Bless America."

On January 20th, 1993 Governor Mario Cuomo is inaugurated President.  "Americans, today we are on a new course.  We will look out for the middle class and the poor.  The healthcare system will be intact as long as I'm President.  We also will plan to help Iraq form a new government.  Thanks and God Bless America."

In late January the House debates the Civil Rights Act of 1993 which would make discrimination against people for their sexual orientation illegal.  The House votes 245-190.  In the Senate 3 Democrats (Howell Heflin, Richard Shelby and Robert Byrd) state they won't support it.  Therefore the Democrats need 8 Republican votes.  So far John McCain (R-AZ), Jim Jeffords (R-VT), Mark Hatfield (R-OR), Nancy Kassenbaum (R-KA), John Danforth (R-MO) and William Cohen (R-ME).  All they need is 2 more votes in favor and they can avoid a filibuster.

In the end the Democrats end up with 60 votes in favor of the Civil Rights Act of 1993 on February 12th with the help of Senators John Chafee and Arlen Specter (thus adding to the 58 supporters already).  On February 14th (Valentines Day), President Cuomo signs it into law.  Cuomo states "This is a great day for gay and lesbian Americans."

On February 26th the World Trade Center is bombed.  The blast killed 6 and injured a little more than 1,000 people.  President Cuomo calls this "A sad day for America.  We must combat our enemy and make buildings in America safer."

Speaker Tom Foley decides to bring up the Security Act of 1993.  This would have better security in buildings across America, including survelience cameras.  The House passes this 325-110.  The Senate then passes it 78-22.  President Cuomo signs it into law on March 5th.

Meanwhile, in foreign affairs, Iraq is scheduled to hold an election in June for a President.

Back at home, Congress is debating a jobs bill.  President Cuomo asks Congress for millionaires to pay 5% more in taxes compared with Kennedy 10% increase about a decade ago.  The House votes on the Stimulus Act of 1993.  It would put most of the taxes on the rich to good use.  The House passes it 260-175.  The Senate votes 58-42.  President Cuomo signs it into law on April 10th, 1993.

On May 1, 1993 President Premadasa of Sri Lanka is assasinated.

On June 10th, Iraq holds their first free Presidential Election.  They elect Jalal Talabani.

President Cuomo states "The Iraqi people have spoken and wanted a true leader.  Over the next few months we will continue to monitor the situation in Iraq before talking about a timetable to withdrawal."

In the fall of 1993 former President Barry Goldwater Jr. announces he's running for his old Senate seat.  He will be running against current Senator John Tunney.

If Goldwater wins in the 1994 midterm elections the Republicans promise to make him the leader of their party in the Senate.

In the spring of 1994 the House passes a budget where most of the money is spent on healthcare and gives the rich up to an 8% increase in taxes to pay for social programs.  The House passes the Budget Act of 1994.  Then it goes to the Senate where they pass it 61-39.  It will be up for revision in 3 years.

The unemployment level had dropped down to 7.5% from being at 8.2%.  President Cuomo's approval rating is 60%.

The Democrats could pick up 15 seats in the House and 2 or 3 in the Senate because of President Cuomo's approval rating.

Republicans are calling the Preisdent "a government grower."  President Cuomo comes back and says "I'd rather have some form of government rather than no government like the GOP want."

Former VP Bentsen states "About 90% of the Republican Party is out of touch."

Former President Goldwater says "I think most of the Democratic Party is out of touch."

On May 1st, 1994 the House passes the North American Free Trade Agreement Act of 1994 278-157.  A few days later the Senate passes it 65-35.  President Cuomo signs it into law on May 30th.

On July 17th, Brazil beats Italy 3-2 in the 1994 World Cup.

In the fall of 1994 President Cuomo campaigns hard for Democrats across the country.

He campaigns hard for Tunney against Goldwater in the California Senate race.  "We can't afford Goldwater in the Senate.  He's just too extreme right."
