Senator Specter goes to Puerto Rico to campaign the day of the primary.  He tells Puerto Ricans "If elected I plan to have Puerto Rico represented in the U.S. capital."  Senate Minority Leader Barry Goldwater Jr. campaigns with him in Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico: March 3rd

Republican: 14 delegates
Specter 65%-9 delegates
Buchanan 35%-5 delegates

Specter says "Thank you Puerto Rico.  You've given my campaign a bigger majority in delegates.  We're now on our way to the nomination."

Get ready for the March 5th primaries.  Buchanan could possibly win in Connecticut, Vermont and Rhode Island.

Cuomo states "One of my possible opponents is be a man who has the support of a former President.  That former President wanted to get rid of the Education Department.  Thomas Jefferson would've been rolling in his grave had this passed Congress."

Specter states "I never said I'd get rid of the Education Department.  The Democrats are just playing politics here.  Just because the former President endorsed me doesn't mean I share all his views."

That last sentence triggers a comment from the Buchanan camp.  They say "If Specter doesn't share all Goldwater's views than we can afford him as our party's nominee.  I'd rather have a nominee with conservative principles and lose than a nominee who has some liberal opinions."

Senate Minority Leader Barry Goldwater Jr. states "What Mr. Buchanan must remember is you must compromise on some pieces of legislation.  We all have our opinions but if we don't compromise there can be gridlock.  This is one of the reasons I'm supporting Senator Specter in the primaries."

Meanwhile Independent candidate Ross Perot says "We need a stop to all this fighting in Washington.  I can bring America back to the times when both parties got along better.  I also believe we need a fair and balanced budget compared to the past budgets."

Not sure what would be more entertaining, Specter v Cuomo with Perot getting a significant amount from dis-satisfied Conservatives, or Buchanan running a give 'em Hell campaign against Cuomo but sadly failing. Also, if Specter wins the nom, I could see Buchanan giving it a third try in 2000 (which he almost did). Interesting stuff.

One thing I notice and find amusing is Goldwater (Jr.)'s move towards the center of the party in relation to the fact that his party is moving to the Right. He supported Reagan in '76 I'll bet, ran as the Conservative against Bush in '84, but by the time '92 rolled around he was running as the more liberal of the two candidates, and now at 1996 he's supporting Arlen Specter, a liberal Republican. I think it sort of accurately describes the way the party's changing. Though I think Barry could give it one more go in 2000 is he felt like it.

I can change it if you want me to so Goldwater Jr will support Buchanan instead.

Nah. It's just an observation. I like it like this. To me it shows the direction the party's going in relation to where Goldwater is. I like it.

Depending on who wins the election Senator Goldwater Jr. will be a potential candidate in 2000.

On March 6th Senator Goldwater goes to New York to help Specter gain support there for the primary the following day.  "I feel that Senator Specter will be best for America.  He's the strongest GOP candidate in a race against the current President."

Also newly turned Republican, Senator Richard Shelby endorses Pat Buchanan.  He says "Buchanan is a fiscal conservative who will serve his country well."

New York: March 7th

Specter 64%-65 delegates
Buchanan 36%-37 delegates
