Pretty interesting shifts - 1978 in particular, midterms wise. 51-48 is pretty interesting given how that era actually turned out for the Senate.

I'm not sure Ronald Reagan would have won in 1976 but that's an interesting thought nonetheless. Good work.

Republicans probably would've been better off if Reagan didn't win, because then Carter would fail, and Reagan or another Republican would be back in 1980. I can actually see Reagan winning the nomination a second time if he lost in 1976.

I think that Carter will run and possibly win in 1980, what with the close midterms and Reagan's dubious position with the voters. It will be close, though, much closer than the TL's 1976 (or RL 1976, for that matter).

Will Jerry Brown and Scoop Jackson enter the fray in 1980? Two of my more preferred Democrats...

That's true enough, actually. Reagan could have won the nomination a second time I agree - but it would have been tougher in 1980 if he had been the nominee in 1976 and lost.

On October 1, 1979 Henry "Scoop" Jackson announces his run for President in 1980.  "Today Americans I've decided to run for President in the Democratic primaries.  My vision is a better America than we've seen over the last 3 1/2 years.  We must have an America where Democrats and Republicans can come together.  We haven't seen that much as Reagan's vetoed just about every piece of legislation in the past Congress.  We can't have that kind of leadership in the White House and that's why a vote for me is your best choice next year."

If a Democrat has to win, let it be Scoop. Then, at least America will survive.

As November 1979 gets here, the Energy Crisis isn't only thing that's causing Reagan bad polling.  The other issue is the hostages that are captured and taken to Iran.

Congressman John Anderson decides to jump into the race.  "Today I decided that I must challenge the President in the primaries.  He's just been wrong on a majority of the issues we face today.  He hasn't shown great leadership.  We need new leadership in the party and you will get that with an Anderson Presidency."

Polling:
Reagan 63%
Anderson 25%
Undecided 12%

Democratic polling:
Kennedy 44%
Jackson 39%
Udall 12%
Undecided 5%

There's speculation that Jimmy Carter may jump in the race and make things more scrambled.  On the Republican side former President Gerald Ford may consider entering the race (only if Anderson will drop out.)

In December of 1979 John Anderson decides to drop out and Gerald Ford decides to jump in the race against President Reagan.  Ford states "We can't afford 4 more years of President Reagan.  That's why today I'm jumping into the race in 1980 for President of the United States."

When Reagan hears about Ford he says privately "I can beat him in the primaries.  I proved that back in 1976."

As Iowa gets closer it looks like Kennedy could win it on the Democratic side and Reagan (with a slim margin over Ford) could win it on the Republican side.

It's kind of funny having two Presidents go at it, repeating the same conflict from only four years ago. It's kind of like Roosevelt vs. Taft except Ford doesn't have the personal popularity or legacy that Roosevelt had.

After losing both Iowa and New Hampshire, Mo Udall decides to drop out of the race for the Democratic nomination and endorses Senator Kennedy.  "Today I decide to leave the Presidential race and endorse Senator Ted Kennedy.  He will lead our party toward victory in November against President Reagan."

Total delegates so far:

Republican delegates:
Reagan-39 delegates
Ford-34 delegates

It's a close race for the Republicans this year.

Democratic delegates:
Kennedy-40 delegates
Jackson-29 delegates

Yeah I know.  I just thought that Ford would give Reagan a run for his money in the economy he was facing.
