On March 26th Billy Crystal hosts the 62nd Academy Awards.

In the summer of 1990 President Goldwater meets with Boris Yeltsin (the newly elected President of Russia).  He congratulates Yeltsin on the destruction of the USSR and forming a new country.  "This shows that if there needs to be a change in government there can be."

By August 1990 Iraq invades Kuwait.  The UN decided unanimously that something had to be done.  President Goldwater decides to send some people over to save Kuwait from being taken over by Iraq.

The 1990 Midterm Elections are happening soon.  Wait and see what happens.

In September 1990 President Goldwater declares that "if we must invade Iraq we will."

On September 30th President Goldwater asks Congress to declare war on Iraq.  The House votes 345-90.  The Senate votes 78-22.

On October 14, 1990 music composer Leonard Bernstein passed away.  He was 72.

Leonard Bernstein

1990 Midterms:

He was a music composer.  I like to add different things other than just policy issues to make it more interesting.  Also regarding the war I added that he declared war on Iraq in the end of September.

On December 20, 1990 former Governor Jerry Brown announces he's a candidate for the Democratic nomination for President in 1992.  "Today Americans I've decided to throw my hat in the ring for the Democratic nomination for President.  I feel that 1992 could be our year and give the Democrats huge majorities in the House and Senate."

President Goldwater states "We're going to beat Jerry Brown in 1992.  He is too liberal for the country.  Next thing you know, if elected, he will be proposing the same ideas that former Senator Kennedy had done while President."

Brown hits Goldwater on the Education issue.  He says "Where has the President been on education since taking office?  He's been against public education."

Other Possible Democrats:
Tenn. Sen. Al Gore (1988 nominee)
Ark. Gov. Bill Clinton
Mass. Gov. Michael Dukakis
Sen. Gary Hart
Rev. Jesse Jackson

January 3rd, 1991 the 102nd Congress is inaugurated.  The new Speaker of the House Tom Foley states "During the next 2 years we will work well with President Goldwater."  In the Senate, Majority Bob Dole states "If we want to get alot accomplished over the next 2 years we will need to get help from Democrats."  President Goldwater even states "I hope, like Senator Dole said, we get alot done over the next two years."

Later that month Goldwater gives his 6th State of the Union.  "Mr. Speaker, Mr. Vice President, Members of Congres and distingushed guests welcome tonight.  One issue I want to address is the war in Iraq.  Hopefully within the next year we can get the Iraqi's out of Kuwait.  We are a nation of greatness and strength.  I'm glad that we've have less government over the past 6 years.  We can't have a large government like we had under President Kennedy.  Thanks and God Bless America."

On February 1st, 1991 Reverend Jesse Jackson announces he will run for the Democratic nomination for President.  "Today Americans I've decided to run for President again.  Over the last 8 years we haven't seen anything done for the middle class.  I believe we need a President who looks out for all the people not just a few.  Thank you and God Bless America."

A few days later President Goldwater (who is now allowed to run for a 3rd term) announces he's officially a candidate for re-election.  "As of today I'm a candidate for a 3rd term for President of the United States.  We need to continue the path forward.  We've had our high roads and low roads the last 8 years but all in all we've been on a pretty good course.  Thank you and God Bless America."

In late February Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton announces he's a candidate for the Democratic nomination for President.  "Today Americans I've decided to become a candidate for President of the United States.  We can't afford anymore of the look out for the rich attitude like this President has done.  We need a common person President.  A person who didn't come into money like the current President did.  Let's move forward and win the Democratic nomination to face President Goldwater in November.  Thank you and God Bless America."

In March of 1991 New York Governor Mario Cuomo (and former Dem VP candidate in 1988) announces he's a candidate for the Democratic nomination for President.  "Today Americans I've decided to throw my hat into the race for President in 1992.  I hope to be the Democratic nominee next year and the next President of the United States with your help.  Thanks and God Bless America."

During the next few months the House debates over ways to stop discrimination based on sexual orientation.  President Goldwater states "In some ways this interferes with people's lives however we do need to stop discrimination."  The House votes on Anti-Discrimination Act of 1991 235-200.  In the Senate it's a somewhat different story.  47 Democrats and 4 Republicans (John Danforth, Mark Hatfield, Nancy Kassenbaum and Jim Jeffords) are already signed aboard to support this legislation.  Senator Jesse Helms (R-SC) and Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV) call this legislation "terrible".

In the Senate they are at a stand still regarding civil rights for gays and lesbians.  Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole states "This is the wrong legislation at this time."  Arizona Senator John McCain decided to support this legislation.  Even after meeting with Republican Senators, President Goldwater can't get enough support for it.  It fails to be brought up for debate.

In June 1991 Senator Al Gore (1988 Dem nominee) decides to announce he's a candidate for the Democratic nomination in 1992 for President.  "Today Americans I feel that we can't afford a laissez faire government like we've had over the past 8 years.  We're going to keep failing if we don't have some government regulations.  Remember a few years ago President Goldwater tried to get rid of the Education and Enery Departments.  Luckily it didn't get passed Congress.  Who knows what he'll do in the next 4.  I'm counting on your support in the primaries next year.  Thank you and God Bless America."

However by August 1991 the economy starts to take a turn for the worse.  President Goldwater's approval rating is 39%.

On September 4th, 1991 conservative commontator Pat Buchanan decides to challenge President Goldwater in the 1992 Republican primaries.  "Today I want to throw my hat in the ring for the 1992 Republican Presidential nomination.  Over the past 8 years we've seen President Goldwater occasionally modify his position so he'd get things done.  He's caved in on some issues: including the healthcare debate.  If elected I will repeal the National healthcare we have in the states as well as fight to get rid of the Departments of Education And Energy."

Democratic candidates:
TN Sen. Al Gore
NY Gov. Mario Cuomo
Rev. Jesse Jackson
Fmr. CA Gov. Jerry Brown

Throughout the fall both Republicans and Democrats are attacking eachother.  On the Republican side Pat Buchanan states "Total conservatism doesn't exist under this President.  On my first day in office I'll repeal the healthcare and get rid of the Department of Education and Energy.  President Goldwater isn't a true conservative Republican or a real fighter."

In RL, Buchanan worked for Nixon 69-74, Ford 74-75, & Reagan. I'm guessing he worked for Reagan 77-81, & maybe for part of Goldwater's first term?

What's some of the Dem primary polling look like?

Iowa: February 10th

Democrat:59 delegates
Cuomo 32%-19 delegates
Brown 28%-17 delegates
Jackson 18%-11 delegates
Gore 14%-8 delegates
Clinton 8%-6 delegates

Governor Mario Cuomo says "Thanks Iowa for giving me this opportunity to win the caucus here.  We did great tonight.  Now we need to get more wins over the course of the next few months to get the nomination and take back the White House in November.  Thank you and God Bless America."

Republican: 30 delegates
Goldwater 70%-21 delegates
Buchanan 30%-9 delegates

President Barry Goldwater Jr. states "Thanks Iowa for giving me a win here."

Pat Buchanan states "We got almost a third of the vote in Iowa.  That shows that this President doesn't have total party loyalty like he had 4 years ago.  We need a true conservative as President.  He hasn't stood firm against the healthcare law.  He hasn't got rid of the Departments of Energy and Education.  We will go forward and hopefully win New Hampshire."

All across New Hampshire, on the Republican side Pat Buchanan is calling Goldwater "Not a true conservative and a guy who just gives up when he's beaten."

President Goldwater comes back and says "If Buchanan was President he'd understand there sometimes needs to be compromises.  I however do want to get rid of the healthcare law as well as  the Departments of Energy and Education."

Buchanan calls that "blasphemy."  Polls on the GOP side suggest Buchanan could crack over 40% of the vote in New Hampshire.

President Goldwater states he will pressure Democrats in the House to bring up a bill repealing the Universal Healthcare Act of 1981.  However Buchanan believes Goldwater's just doing this "to get votes".

New Hampshire: February 18th

Democrat: 24 delegates
Cuomo 37%-9 delegates
Brown 34%-8 delegates
Gore 17%-4 delegates
Jackson 8%-2 delegates
Clinton 4%-1 delegate

After all the votes are in AR Gov. Bill Clinton decides to drop out of the race for the Democratic nomination for President in 1992.  "I feel that I can't go any further without more support in the contests.  Therefore I endorse New York Governor Mario Cuomo.  Thank you and God Bless America."

Republican: 23 delegates
Goldwater 56%-13 delegates
Buchanan 44%-10 delegates

Goldwater states "Well I guess there's a real race here now that Buchanan's actually getting more and more delegates against myself.  We must slow down his momentum."

Buchanan states "We did it.  We got over 40% in the primary.  I'm so proud of my supporters who worked hard to get us this far.  This race is far from over.  Now let's go forward and win.  Thank you and God Bless America."

President Goldwater calls on Speaker Foley to bring up a repeal of the healthcare law passed in 1981.  Foley said "President Goldwater will never get repeal of the law as long as I'm Speaker."  Privately he says "Republicans made a compromise a few years back if we didn't filibuster then they wouldn't bring up repeal of healthcare.  President Goldwater can go somewhere warm where it stays that way all year."

Not surprised that Buchanan came close in NH but has failed to win anything. On the other side, it looks like Cuomo's gonna take it. Wonder if Goldwater will be able to pull off a third victory.

On February 26th President Goldwater asks Congress to discuss the budget as it's up for debate this year.  The House passes the Balanced Budget Act of 1992 which would spend some money on social programs and some on defense over the next 5 years.  They figure a "half/half" deal would be better than the other way.  The House passes this 256-179 on February 27th.  The Senate passes the Budget Control Act of 1992 which would have a spending cap at $1.5 billion on all expenses over the next 2 years.  The Senate passes this 63-37 on February 29th.  Meanwhile the House passes it 272-163 on March 1st.

Back to the primaries soon.

March 3rd primaries:

Colorado:

Democrat: 58 delegates
Brown 35%-20 delegates
Cuomo 32%-19 delegates
Jackson 21%-12 delegates
Gore 12%-7 delegates

Republican: 37 delegates
Goldwater 61%-23 delegates
Buchanan 39%-14 delegates

Georgia:

Democrat: 96 delegates
Gore 37%-36 delegates
Cuomo 34%-33 delegates
Brown 20%-19 delegates
Jackson 9%-8 delegates

Republican: 52 delegates
Goldwater 67%-35 delegates
Buchanan 33%-17 delegates

Maryland:

Democrat: 85 delegates
Cuomo 40%-34 delegates
Brown 30%-26 delegates
Jackson 19%-16 delegates
Gore 11%-9 delegates

Republican: 42 delegates
Goldwater 63%-27 delegates
Buchanan 37%-15 delegates

After not winning a single primary Buchanan decides to drop out of the race.  "Tonight I feel I must end my Presidential run as a Republican candidate for President."  There's speculation that Buchanan may run as an Independent in the General Election.

On the Democratic side Jesse Jackson decides to drop out of the race for the Democratic nomination and decides to endorse Governor Mario Cuomo.  "I must end my bid for the Democratic Presidential nomination as I've not done good as I wanted to.  Thanks for your support the primaries so far.  I go forward and endorse Governor Mario Cuomo."

President Goldwater is the defacto Republican nominee now.
