An interesting contest, Hollings could have been a problem due to his segregationist past and fiscal conservatism that would be bad in Northeast. Hollings could attract liberal voters attacking excessive defense expenses, like fiscal conservatism. Hart could energize liberal base better than Geraldine and Mondale. Probably, Hollings would win some states in Deep South, like South Carolina, Alabama and would have good opportunities in Rockies and Plains, like in Dakotas, Colorado. Probably, Fritz largest state would have been Pennsylvania, but I believe that Reagan would remain as winner with something like 400 votes in Electoral College.

I think Reagan would win every state, although Hollings might have a chance in West Virginia, Maryland, and Iowa.

EDIT:  Given Hollings' history, this would probably also yield the worst result for the Dems in D.C. ever.

I thank you for your friendship to me and to my country. It's an interesting thread. In one side, a charismatic conservative incumbent versus a man that can go across party lines and appeal to traditional conservative base.

I don't see how Hollings can excite the Dem base any more than Mondale could. Sure, Hollings could pull over some conservatives, but enough conservatives would stick with Reagan that it wouldn't have mattered.

SC is a tossup, but I think Reagan takes it.

Hollings could win West Virginia or South Carolina, but nothing more.
