It's amusing that any member of Congress (in either party) only has to break the party line on a couple of issues to be considered a "Moderate Hero".

Okay, just throwing this out there then leaving the room.

Any chance Paul would run? He'll likely be throwing away his safe (mostly, but for a united tea party challenge) house seat for a long shot, but hey.

After all, if he's such an underrated national candidate for the presidential nomination, he certainly would have a chance to win a statewide primary in Texas, right? Grin

<pulls the pin and runs>

I'd love it, but I doubt he's leaving his Congressional seat for much of anything. As I've said with regard to his presidential run as well: the dude is old.

Hmm? Party discipline in the United States is far weaker than anywhere else in the West.

It's not so much them being a Moderate Hero as being liked by Moderate Heroes.

anyway, the point is that it's not a completely ridiculous thing to throw out there, there's some minor degree of speculation

Is anyone all that suprised with this announcement?  I'm really not as she has toyed with a run for governor in the 2010 cycle, and I think she was just getting tired of Washington.  I really don't blame her.

Now, the question I have is, will she serve out her remaining term or will she quit before then?

I'm not surprised. She probably would have been teabagged had she not retired anyways, and seeing what's happened to some of her fellow Republicans in the primaries, she probably decided to just call it quits. Sad to see her go, but like someone else mentioned on here, now Texas will probably have a teabagger senator.

Or, you know, she could just want to retire due to being 67.

Two years after running for Governor? Yeah, right. (Then again, she *might* be sick of specifically the Senate.)

Hacktime: If he isn't purposedrawn a new House seat, I want Ciro to run. And win, of course. Cheesy

Probably the major reason why KBH ran for governor is because she was tired of Washington.

No, not right, Badger. Yes, Texas has a surprising tolerance for some oddities, but one of those does not include being hostile to a muscular US foreign policy, and Israel bashing bordering on Jew bashing. It might however tolerate his odds views on fiat currency and "gold bugism," in part because of the flogging of gold on right wing talk radio.

Paul isn't going to win the nomination, folks.

So far:

Ted Cruz - former Solicitor General, had considered running for AG, if Abbot had run for Senate, so this may indicate Abbot is not running for senate.  Though if Abbot were elected, Cruz could then be appointed AG.

Michael Williams - Railroad Commission
Elizabeth Ames Jones - Railroad Commission

David Dewhurst - Lt. Governor (if he were to be elected, 31 senators choose new Lt.Governor from among them).

Roger Williams - former Secretary of State, has been endorsed by George HW Bush.  SOS is an appointed position, but nonetheless has several secretaries have been politically successful after holding the office:

John Hill
Bob Bullock
Mark White
Ron Kirk
Tony Garza
Alberto Gonzales
Henry Cuellar

I assume John Sharp is still interested, as is Chris Bell.  Bill White says he needs to make some money.
