The parties shift platforms.

A popular and very Southern governor (Democrats - now the conservative party) runs against a Republican liberal from South Dakota.

Oh, and West Virginia umm..starts thinking  it's cool to vote liberal.

It's like 20 years in the future so California and Maryland are now swing states.

Even so, the Dems would have to run Evan Bayh/Tim Johnson against Robert Ehrlich/Arnold Schwarzenegger for the GOP.

Uh, they just did that this election...

Well, not against North Dakota of course, but otherwise you are correct.

Though NY and RI voting for a losing Republican candidate is kind of hard to foresee anytime soon.
