Greek population decreased by 1 mil. according to census data

According to census data published by the National Statistical Service of Greece, the country’s population has decreased drastically within one year.

More specifically, the census survey held in May 2011 all over the country showcases that Greeks have decreased by one million. 2011 census proves that Greek citizens fell to 9,903,268 in contrast to former population numbers that numbered over 10 million reaching at its zenith even 11.

Specialists assume that the main reason for this significant drop may have been financial crisis which forced many Greek people, especially the young, to move to more stable countries.

Ireland's population still has not recovered from the potato famine.

there does seem to have been a little bit of a third wave of Greeks here too, actually. Met three since I got home, which isn't exactly a tidal wave, but it's more than in the decade or so previous.

Not to mention all the Albanians, Bulgarians, and Romanians that have gone back home... Or are they even counted in the census?

This should lead to some discrepancy between GNI and GDP figures, no?

This is perhaps the worst news I have ever heard about Greece. Demography is destiny. And losing 1/10th your population is an economic apocalypse.

Bingo!  I've seen it in some PA steel towns in the 1980's.

The talented are leaving.

Not necessarily. There are a great many overpopulated places that need to have fewer people. Does anybody think the Lower East Side of Manhattan was a nicer place in 1912 than it is in 2012?

Greece is far easier to legally get out of than most other countries suffering forced intercourse with the IMF. The result shouldn't surprise anybody.
