The Republican candidate in all of the general election maps that have been posted here from 1912 to the present has won Granville every time - even in 1964 and even in 1996. Since I live just south of the border from that town, I can understand why.

It's an illusion of the color scheme - McGovern did quite well but only won a few towns in his own right, and many of those >40% Hart towns are like 40.08%, etc.

As you can see by Fall River/New Bedford/Chelsea Mondale's base was in more urban/depressed areas but Jackson took away some of those voters.

And as for Moderate Heroes not doing so well in Massachusetts...

He won Suffolk county with over 61% of the vote.

IIRC he got 59.80% in Boston or some nonsense, but winning Chelsea and Revere (which had more population than they do now) by big margins (and even winning Winthrop!) put him over to top 60 in Suffolk.

Also, it is worth noting that Newton and Brookline used to be much more GOP friendly.

Interesting. I guess it must have been around 1988 when Democrats started winning the Rte. 128 corridor (Lexington, Concord, Acton, etc.)
