If the Republican candidates for President in 2012 were Haley Barbour, Mitch Daniels, Newt Gingrich, Mike Huckabee, Sarah Palin, Ron Paul, Tim Pawlenty, and Mitt Romney who would you vote for?

Mike Huckabee ............................................... 18%
Mitt Romney.................................................... 17%
Sarah Palin ..................................................... 16%
Newt Gingrich ................................................. 14%
Ron Paul......................................................... 9%
Tim Pawlenty .................................................. 5%
Mitch Daniels .................................................. 4%
Haley Barbour................................................. 1%
Someone else/Undecided............................... 15%

Let’s say Mike Huckabee decides not to run and the candidates for President next year were Haley Barbour, Mitch Daniels, Newt Gingrich, Jon Huntsman, Sarah Palin, Ron Paul, Tim Pawlenty, and Mitt Romney. Who would you vote for?

Mitt Romney.................................................... 20%
Sarah Palin ..................................................... 19%
Newt Gingrich ................................................. 18%
Ron Paul......................................................... 12%
Tim Pawlenty .................................................. 6%
Mitch Daniels .................................................. 5%
Haley Barbour................................................. 4%
Jon Huntsman................................................. 2%
Someone else/Undecided............................... 15%

Let’s say Sarah Palin decides not to run and the candidates for President next year were Haley Barbour, Mitch Daniels, Newt Gingrich, Mike Huckabee, Jon Huntsman, Ron Paul, Tim Pawlenty, and Mitt Romney. Who would you vote for?

Mike Huckabee ............................................... 22%
Newt Gingrich ................................................. 20%
Mitt Romney.................................................... 18%
Ron Paul......................................................... 9%
Tim Pawlenty .................................................. 7%
Mitch Daniels .................................................. 4%
Haley Barbour................................................. 3%
Jon Huntsman................................................. 2%
Someone else/Undecided............................... 14%

Let’s say neither Mike Huckabee nor Sarah Palin runs for President and the candidates next year were Haley Barbour, Mitch Daniels, Newt Gingrich, Jon Huntsman, Ron Paul, Tim Pawlenty, Mitt Romney, and Rick Santorum. Who would you vote for?

Newt Gingrich ................................................. 24%
Mitt Romney.................................................... 24%
Ron Paul......................................................... 12%
Tim Pawlenty .................................................. 6%
Rick Santorum ................................................ 5%
Haley Barbour................................................. 5%
Mitch Daniels .................................................. 4%
Jon Huntsman................................................. 2%
Someone else/Undecided............................... 18%

PPP surveyed 600 national Republican primary voters from March 10th to 13th. The survey’s margin of error is +/-4.1%. Other factors, such as refusal to be interviewed and weighting, may introduce additional error that is more difficult to quantify.

As almost all of us agree, national polling now is fairly useless.  I also think Gingrich's strength in the deceiving because of the reasonable chance Michelle Bachamann runs and runs well in Iowa even if the Foxes are out.  I also think we're going to see a shutdown which I bet will hurt Gingrich via reminder.

I love PPP. Finally someone polls without Huckabee and Palin.

I thought Palin would be leading without Huck in the race. National polling doesn't really matter though. If Palin pulls Iowa and South Carolina she'll be in great shape.

This is very interesting.

Will PPP now do all their state polls with and without Huck and Sarah?

Funny how Paul takes nothing from Palin.

Also funny how he takes 1/6th of Huckabee voters. Shocked

There's no way it could but I think endorsements are overlooked.  Not that I think Romney won't pick up any Huckabee supporters but it's a good bet if Huckabee doesn't run, he will still use his platform to campaign against Romney.  Seems to me Huckabee would likely endorse and campaign for Barbour.  I suppose if Pawlenty is the closest to Romney in Iowa, he could go that way but my hunch is Barbour.  That doesn't mean most of his own supporters would listen to him but it would have some effect.  I've also speculated if Palin doesn't run she's likely to endorse Bachmann.  Not that she'd like Bachmann to encroach on her turf, but if the momentum is there anyway, she may just try to attach her own name and brand to the Michele movement so as to benefit herself.  But who knows?  If both she and Huckabee endorsed Pawlenty, he'd obviously benefit more than polling different variations could possibly indicate.  They would catalyze the momentum of whichever candidate they touch.
