why is it no longer as hardcore GOP as it once was? Even Goldwater won it with 59% in 1964. Although Bush won it in 2004, he won it with 54%, less than Goldwater did in a bad GOP year. The PVI of the county used to probably be an R+15 and now its only an R+1.

The presence of Obama, who is from neighboring Cook County, certainly helped out a lot.

That's part of it - apart from that it's just the same old story of suburbs maturing.

I think that effect is rather overestimated....although it might have been good for a couple of %.

As far as Goldwater is concerned, I think it has to do with Johnson doing badly in Illinois in general. (He even didn't crack 60% in Illinois, and I think that's where we need to ask "why".)

Goldwater made a concerted effort to win Illinois.

Broadly Speaking, alot of the Conservative ones moved to Suburban Texas, Georgia, etc. and were replaced with Liberals moving out of Chicago proper.

Naperville, which is largely in DuPage, was described to me once as "a bunch of wealthy yuppies." It was voted the second-best place to live in America by Money Magazine in 2006.

DuPage is  basically a collection of wealthy, well-educated suburbs where someone like Obama could perform very well against someone like McCain (especially with Palin on the ticket). There are a lot of suburban areas in America that didn't really like George W Bush, even though they were wealthy and traditionally Republican.

That's part of it - apart from that it's just the same old story of suburbs maturing.

wouldn't a suburb being more mature make it more republican? Because mature suburbs tend to have a lot of older people living in them, making it more likely to be a gop stronghold.

What you mean by a suburb maturing is broadly its founder generation dying out or moving away. Tongue

A "matured" suburb has nothing to do with the age of its population. It means that the suburb no longer has a lot of empty land into which to expand, and that development is fairly dense. Mature suburbs include places like Long Island, Westchester, San Mateo County, Broward County, etc.
