The second term of President Wood turned tragic only 5 months after his inauguration. President Wood retired to bed on the night of August 20th, 1925. On the morning of August 21st, he was found on the floor, dead of a heart attack. His wife, Louise, was touring Europe, the first goodwill trip of a first lady in US History, at the time. Vice President Coolidge was sworn in that night.

President Coolidge's first term was relatively uneventfully. He asked Charles Dawes to be his Vice President, and he was later confirmed by the Senate. However, by 1928, his popularity had slowly faded. People derided him as a "do nothing" president. He faced a brief convention challenge by Senate majority leader Charles Curtis, but along with VP Dawes, won the nomination of the Republican Party again.

The Democratic convention was also very dull. Former Secretary of State John Davis easilly was nominated, with other major contenders, like Al Smith, and William McAdoo sitting out. Davis asked Franklin Roosevelt, the former Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and a Congressman from New York to be his running mate.

President Coolidge used radio as his advantage throughout the start of his Presidential campaign. He also launched a 48 state tour of the United States. However, he struggled to keep up with Roosevelt's charisma, and Davis's experience. On election day, President Coolidge was handily returned to office, despite the Davis and Roosevelt ticket performing better then expected.

President Calvin Coolidge/Vice President Charles Dawes-52% of the PV, 290 EV.
Fmr. Secretary John Davis/Congressman Franklin Roosevelt-48% of the PV, 241 EV.

Only one year into President Coolides second term, the US and World Economy took a massive hit. The Stock Market crashed, and the Great Depression began to ravage the world. In early 1930, unemployment had reached 9.3%, and President Coolidge was even shot at! In Germany, elections went well for the National Socialist, and Hitler was able to be appointed Chancellor.

By 1931, the stress of the Presidency had taken a powerfull toll on the health of Calvin Coolidge. Like his predecessor, he died in office, on May 4th, 1931. He was seceded by VP Charles Dawes, who became the 31st President that evening. In a radio address, he promised not to seek reelection.

The 1932 Republican convention was hectic. Supporters of Treasury Secretary Hebert Hoover, and Frank Lowden, clashed on the floor. Herbert Hoover was eventually nominated, and he asked George Norris to be his running mate, to unite the party.

The Democratic convention was less exciting. Congressman Franklin Roosevelt easilly won the nomination, and asked James Reed, of Missouri to be his running mate. Other candidates included Al Smith, John Garner, and William Murray.

The General election was heated, but from the start, however, Hoover trailed Roosevelt from the start. The two agreed to debate eachother, on a unprecedented Radio broadcast. However, on election day, 12 years of Republican dominance ended.

Secretary Herbert Hoover/Congressman George Norris-41% of the PV, 114 EV.

Only one criticism this time around: There wasn't a system for appointing Vice-Presidents back then, that was only established in 1967 with an amendment. Aside from that, good.

President Roosevelts first term was marked by a massive program to fight the Depression. The President established multiple agencies to help farmers, and workers across the country, however, Conservative opposition expanded day by day. By 1935, the nation was split. While poor Whites in the South supported the President, they also feared a massive expansion of the Federal government, especially after he nationalized steel factories in Pennsylvania, to assist strikers.

Republicans looked to retake the White House, but had a weak field. All this changed when former President Charles Dawes agreed to enter the race. He won the Republican convention on the first ballot, and asked Governor Alf Landon to be his running mate.

The Democrats eagerly renominated President Roosevelt, and Vice President Reed, with a insurgent challenge coming from Lousiana governor Huey Long. Long, however, declined a third party run, hoping to secure his position in the party, and run for the nomination in 1940.

President Roosevelt won a second term. A crisis was brewing in Europe, with German Chancellor Adolf Hitler taking over Austria, Denmark, and Czechoslavakia on trumped up territorial claims by early 1939. While the US economy made a slow, but steady rebound, concerns over the growing crisis in Europe deeply divided the country.

Republicans had a wide open field, with Herbert Hoover, Senator Robert Taft, and Governor Alf Landon all declaring canidacies. At the convention, however, it was Herbert Hoover who took the nomination on the second ballot. He asked Manhatten Attorney General Thomas Dewey to be his running mate.

The Democratic convention was extremley close, with Huey Long running a insurgent campaign throughout the convention. Eventually, President Roosevelt was renominated, along with VP James Reed.

Lousiana Governor Huey Long ran as a independent, asking Henry Wallace to be his running mate. They campaigned heavilly, picking away at the Democratic Parties Southern base. The campaign however, slowed down, after Huey Long made a series of gaffes, on issues including the Communist Party, the war in Europe, and Civil Rights.

President Franklin Roosevelt/Vice President James Reed-40% of the PV, 215 EV

The peace President Hoover briefly experienced in his first term ended in December of 1941. The Japanese launched a sudden suprise attack on Pearl Harbor. The next day, war was declared on Japan. Only a week later, the US entered the war in Europe, when Hitlers Germany declared war. US troops began a campaign through the Pacific, forcing the Japanese out of Midway,Wake Island, and even, Alaska!

By 1943, Hitlers armies had reached a stalemate in Russia. President Hoover realized the situations potential, and ordered the US Army to prepare a invasion of North Africa, and Italy. By the end of the year, British, and American troops were advancing on Rome. In Oak Ridge, Tennessee, a secret program had started, and early the next year, in 1944, exploded a nuclear device in the Arizona desert.

At the 1944 Republican convention, President Hoover, and Vice President Dewey were unanimously renominated. The Democrats nominated Senator Harry Truman, of Missouri, for President. He asked Senate Majority leader Alben Barkley to be his running mate.

Huey Long wanted to lead a third party campaign once again-however, his plans, and his life would be cut short when he was gunned down in New Orleans, on July 4th, 1944. Henry Wallace did not wish to run.

President Herbert Hoover/Vice President Thomas Dewey-57% of the PV, 425 EV.
Senator Harry Truman/Senate Majority Leader Alben Barkley-43% of the PV, 106 EV.

In December of 1944, Operation Longhorn began. US troops, along with British,Canadian, and Free French forces, crossed the English channel, and invaded France. Only a month later, in January of 1945, US troops took Paris, and the very next week, Rome. Soviet troops began a counter offensive, and also invaded Manchuria. US troops took Okinawa, and prepared for X-Day, the planned invasion of Japan. Secretary of War, General Dwight Eisenhower (only a month into the job), suggested the US use atomic bombs. On February 5th, the cities of Hiroshima, Osaka, and Sendai. Almost a million were killed, and Japan surrendered the very next day. US troops crossed into Germany in early March, and on March 13th, the US dropped a Atomic Bomb on the Nurembourg marching grounds. Hitlers generals began to defect, and by April, only Berlin remained, with Germany being occupied by the Soviets, and Americans. Hitler killed himself on April 15th, though his wife, Eva Braun, fled to Argentina, and died their, in 1972. World War II officially ended on May 1st, 1945.

From 1945, to 1948, the US experianced a major economic boom, which resulted from the Post-War surplus of goods. President Hoover did not wish another term, and Vice President Dewey was billed as his sucessor. Vice President Dewey was easilly nominated at the Republican convention. He asked General Eisenhower to be his running mate.

The Democratic convention was also chaotic. The Conservative faction pushed Strom Thurmond, the Liberals, wanted Senator Truman. It was through this deadlock that a dark horse canidate arose-West Virginia Senator Haley Kilgore. He managed to appease both factions of the Party, and asked Senator Claude Pepper to be his running mate.

Vice President Thomas Dewey/Secretary Dwight Eisenhower-54% of the PV, 342 EV.
Senator Haley Kilgore/Senator Claude Pepper-46% of the PV, 189 EV.

By 1952, Americans began to tire of the Republican controll of the White House. While President Dewey remained fairly popular, his chances for reelection slowly drained. US intervention in Korea, as well as the Berlin Crisis, were constant sources of trouble for the Dewey Administration. The African American Protection Bill passed in 1951, created a early (and unpopular) form of Hate Crime legislation.

The Republican Party began to first hold primaries in 1952. While President Dewey won them all with minimal opposition, he barely survived a convention challenge by California Senator Richard Nixon. President Dewey and VP Eisenhower were renominated, though the unity of the GOP was severely shaken.

The Democratic convention was once more a battle between Conservatives and Liberals. While Strom Thurmond led on the first ballot, his lead evaporated, and eventually, Estes Kefauver won as a compromise candidate. He asked William Averell Harriman to be his running mate, though he declined. Claude Pepper once more ran as the VP nominee as a result.

In 1955, the US began to tire of Kefauver as well. In Alabama and Georgia, Civil Rights marchers went to the streets. In Cuba, the beginnings of a revolution were taking place. In Europe, Soviet Troops invaded and occupied Hungary and East Germany, preventing Democracy to take root. And on October 13th, while in Los Angelas, a lone gunman shot and killed President Kefuaver. The assassin, later revealed to have ties with the mob, as well as Puerto Rican nationalist groups, spent the rest of his life in Jail. Vice President Claude Pepper was sworn in on October 14th.

The 1956 Republican primary season was a heated contest between Earl Warren of California, and Dwight Eisenhower. Eisenhower eventually won, by a extremely narrow margin, and asked Minnesota Senator Harold Stassen to be his running mates.

Democrats renominated President Pepper, who was unopposed in the primaries. He asked Senator Robert Kennedy to be his running mate. Kennedy, of Massachusetts, was popular, with two elder brothers being killed in the war. Dixiecrat Strom Thurmond opposed the ticket, and briefly flirted with a third party run. He eventually endorsed Pepper.

Throughout his term, President Pepper remained popular. He sent Marines into Cuba, in 1957, to prevent Fidel Castro's rebels from taking power. He did the same in Haiti, in 1959. In Europe, he instituted dialogue with the Soviet leadership, and sent troops to Taiwan, helping to ease growing tensions between the Chinese communist and nationalist. He failed in instituting the 22nd Amendment, which guarenteed Healthcare and Housing for all citizens, and also failed in instituting a amendment, limiting the terms a President may have. Even so, he remained popular.

The 1960 Republican primaries were a four way battle between Senator Stassen, Governor Nelson Rockefeller, Senator Richard Nixon, and Former VP Dwight Eisenhower. The Republican convention was divided, though Stassen eventually won. He asked Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. to be his running mate. Former VP Eisenhower left the party, and announced a independent run. He asked Governor Rockefeller to be his running mate.

The Democrats were also divided. While Pepper was the front-runner, Senator Strom Thurmond, and Alabama governor George Wallace, tried to win the nomination, but failed. They formed the Dixiecrat Party, and launched a bid for the White House.

President Claude Pepper/Vice President Robert Kennedy-34% of the PV, 270 EV

Senator Strom Thurmond/Governor George Wallace-10% of the PV, 57 EV.

President Pepper second term was marked by the Turkish Crisis, in which the Soviet Union invaded Eastern Turkey over a series of border disputes, and the treatment of Armenians in the region. This put US missile sights in jeopardy, and the US Airforce was forced to engage Soviet, and rebel groundforces. For one week, the world waited, fearing the third world war. The crisis subsided, when territorial disagreements were negotiated, and the Soviets withdrew. The US pulled their missles out of Turkey, and a series of secret silos were placed in Crete.

The 1964 Republican primary began with a series of victories for Nelson Rockefeller, who, despite running on a third party ticket the year earlier, had regained popularity in the party. He won the convention over his closest rival, Barry Goldwater, and asked Margaret Smith of Maine to be his running mate.

The Democrats renominated Claude Pepper, and Robert Kennedy, without opposition. Senator Strom Thurmond did not seek the Dixiecrat nomination, and George Wallace reluctantly endorsed Pepper.

The Election campaign featured the first campaign ads ever aired, and also had the first televised debate (Radio Debates had taken place in every election since 1932), which Pepper was lauded as the winner in.

President Claude Pepper/Vice President Robert Kennedy-52% of the PV, 290 EV.
Governor Nelson Rockefeller/Senator Margaret Smith-48% of the PV, 248 EV.

President Pepper fully began to push his domestic agenda in his final term. Once more failing at creating Universal Healthcare, he pushed Civil Rights, which he suceded in doing so. A dramatic Senate floor showdown between Senator C. Calvin Sale, of North Carolina, and VP Kennedy ensued, which eventually allowed the Civil Rights Act of 1966 to be passed. In Vietnam, US Marines arrived, and rescued Americans living in the region, after Communist began to takeover.

The 1968 Republican primaries began, with a series of early victories for Governor George Romney. He, however, lost his momentum, after a suprising second place finish in the Michigan primary to Senator Goldwater, who won by a percentile. The Convention was divided, though Senator Goldwater eventually overtook Senator Nixon. Governor Romney and Governor Rockefeller reluctantly endorsed Goldwater, who asked Senator Nixon to be his running mate.

The Democrat primary season was heavilly divided, with canidadates from all factions. Eventually, the primaries became a three way fight between Hubert Humphrey, George Wallace, and Senator Eugene McCarthy. At the convention, Humphrey was nominated, and picked Senator Sale to be his running mate, uniting the party.

Senator Barry Goldwater/Senator Richard Nixon-54% of the PV, 337 EV.
Sentor Hubert Humphrey/Senator Calvin Sale-46% of the PV, 201 EV.

To be fair, the last timeline I screwed him, and Robert Kennedy over. And to clear things up, Calvin Sale is actually Robert Byrd. He was born in NC, but moved to WV as a child, and changed his name.

President Goldwaters term was short, yet successfull. He managed to pass several items on his agenda, including a controversial bill, ending Labor Unions collective bargaining, and also a campaign finance law, which banned Unions and Corporations from making large campaign contributions. Goldwater, however, did not live through his full term. While campaigning for reelection, Arthur Bremmer shot and killed him. President Nixon continued the campaign.

President Nixon won all the Republican primaries, though serious challenges amerged in the form of Phil Crane, a Congressman from Illinois, and a strong write in movement for both Nelson Rockefeller, and George Wallace (who remained a Democrat). Nixon won the convention on the first ballot, and asked Florida Governor Claude Kirk to be his running mate.

The Democratic primaries were once again awaiting on former Vice President (and since 1970, Senator from Massachuesets) Robert Kennedy, though he did not seek the nomination. To the suprise of most, he said he would not run to 1976 or 1980! The Democratic primaries were contested by Senator Calvin Sale, Governor Ronald Reagan, and Senator Henry Jackson. At the convention, Sale won, and asked Senator Birch Bayh to be his running mate.

President Richard Nixon/Governor Claude Kirk-54% of the PV, 309 EV.

President Nixon was highly popular at the start, especially after the US once more landed on the moon in 1971. Four more moonwalks would occur, the last in 1975. President Nixon also focused on a series of domestic reforms, passing the Energy Act, which opened large portions of the US for Oil Exploration, and in 1974, created Medicaid, and Medicare. He also began a series of Educational Reform programs.

President Nixon won the 1976 primary season with no opposition, though Senator George HW Bush, Senator Robert Dole, and Governor Nelson Rockefeller all considered runs. President Nixon was renominated without opposition at the convention.

The Democratic primaries once more went on with Robert Kennedy, however, a much larger field supplemented this. Texas Governor John Connally, Governor Ronald Reagan, Senator Calvin Sale, Senator Henry Jackson, Senator Birch Bayh, Representative Barbara Jordan, Representative Ron Dellums, and Baltimore Mayor Sargent Shriver all competed. On the 9th ballot at the Houston Democratic convention, Governor Reagan was nominated. He asked Senator Bayh to be his running mate once more.

President Nixon would continue as President for a second term, however, it was soon tarnished, when it was revealed he was working with Boeing and other companies to get key contracts with foreign governments. The CEO of Lockheed was even revealed to have purchased a 500 acre ranch for the President in California, which he was to take ownership of once he left office. After a lengthy Senate trial, Nixon was impeached by just 5 votes, on May 3rd. He was seceded by Vice President Claude Kirk, who the next morning asked Senator Robert Dole, of Kansas to be Vice President. He was later confirmed.

The scandal had a huge impact on the 1980 Primary campaign, especially after former VP Robert Kennedy entered. Despite being out of office for 12 years, he easily won most of the primaries, with opposition from Governor Reagan, and Senator Walter Mondale. He asked Lloyd Bentsen to be his running mate. They both were nominated at the Democratic convention on the first ballot.

President Kirk faced opposition as well. Senator George Bush,, and Congressman Phil Crane both ran against him. He was nominated at the convention, after a brutal primary season, and, along with VP Dole, was renominated.

President Kennedy's first term was highly sucessfull. The massive recession which lasted from 1974, ended mid 1982. The President escaped assassination, as well, when John Hinkley shot him after he adressed the Teamsters Union. In 1982, Kennedy finnally passed "Kennedycare", a basic form of Universal Healthcare. By 1984, the economy had rebounded, and the President was more popular then ever!

The Republican primary season started with Senator George Bush as the front runner. However, Conservatives rallied around Congressman Phil Crane, with moderates supporting John Anderson. With Bush's support evaporating, he was forced to drop out, eventually endorsing Crane. When Crane won the primaries, he asked Reverand Pat Robertson to be his running mate. President Kennedy and VP Bentsen were ronominated with opposition at the Democratic convention.
