Ken Jennings lost today. It was sad.

That it was. 74 in a row and 2.5 million is pretty impressive though.

It was getting a bit old, as much as he had growned on me. He showed me that Mormons are not always as crazy as I assumed.

But they still can't drink Coke.

Somehow I don't feel all that sorry for him.

What happened was that he managed to miss both daily doubles in the Double Jeopardy round and the Final Jeopardy round.  He does miss those questions sometimes and he had the bad luck to miss all three in a row today.  With his usual wagering style, had he managed to get any one of those three questions right, he would have won.  In a real sense therefore, the first of those missed wagers, "What was Bastogne?" turned out to be Ken's Waterloo.

As it is, the gal who won bet too much in Final Jeopardy.  If she had missed the question as well, she would have lost, but given that it was a certainty that Jennings was going to wager $5601, had she wagered no more than $1,200, she still would have won had she missed the question and Ken missed the question as well.

I saw him on Thanksgiving. It kinda pissed me off that such a knowledgeable man would miss a question that the obvious answer to was 'Marbury vs Madison'.

Sad fact: Not even a majority of college kids could tell you one thing about 'Marbury vs Madison'

I am so sad. Sad

I wanted him to stay on much longer. I am a HUGE Jeopardy fan, and he added to the show a great deal.

The case that established judicial review being a court ability per the Constitution! Do I win?

I didn't watch Jeopardy that much but this Jennings guy got me interested. I wasn't able to see the show tonight and I don't think I would want to watch it if I had the chance. I don't care if you hated watching him win everyday, it's still sad to see someone who had such a great winning streak lose.

"Most of this firm's 70,000 seasonal white-collar employees work only 4 months a year."

The answer was H & R Block.  He said Fed Ex.  Hmmm

Fed Ex does hire a bunch of seasonal workers to handle the holiday shipping rush, so I wouldn't judge Ken too harshly.  After all, nobody's perfect, and as a straight-laced Mormon who doesn't try to game the tax code, he probably doesn't have experience with H&R Block. Smiley

I found out about this a day before it happened. They played a "leaked" sound clip Monday in the early afternoon.

This kind of thing is probably a major headache for game shows.  I know a guy who was on Regis' Millionaire show. The show aired six months after he was actually there, and he couldn't talk about how much he won.

Ken Jennings was damn impressive to watch.  He easily bested every challenger for 73 episodes...sometimes embarrassingly so.  Still, he reminds me of the smartest kid in the class: his knowledge level was impressive for a few days, but before long you were rooting against him, hoping that he'd be intellectually one-upped.

Which is why I think they paid him to take a fall... or otherwise rigged it against him.

Especially the "Bastogne" question.  He should have known that.

Evidence:

The first question that Trebeck asked Jenning:

"Do you still have your day job"?

I myself have wondered if they would have to eventually do something to get Jennings to move along.  I wonder now if they will put the win limit back on.

Probably, except for the devouted Ken Jennings fans, such as myself (I tuned in everynight to watch him), they lost a lot of ground in ratings.
