Given that Santorum's running for the White House... Casey's safe.

Santorum has the highest base, but I suspect he also has the lowest ceiling. I doubt a majority of voters would like to bring back Senator Man-on-dog, especially when they turned him out by an 18% margin last time.

That's more due to Casey himself. I'm sure plenty of Casey voters would have voted for Santorum against a liberal Democrat. Anyone other than Casey in 2006 and the race would have been closer (not that Santorum would make it to victory).

I'm a little shocked, though, that Casey only leads Santorum by 8 points right now.

Casey was a great candidate, though that mainly explains the margin. Incumbent Senators typically do not lose by 18%. A more liberal Democrat would have faced a much closer race, but I don't think Santorum would have defeated any credible opponent in 2006.

     Also, it's a 12-point margin here. Tongue

Casey is obviously not running for higher office and plans on staying for the two terms and the voters are responding to that positively.

Oh, right. I stand corrected then.
