Let's say that Indira Gandhi decides to hold the election in March 1976, on time. At this time the Emergency was still popular, so she wins a third term in a landslide +/- 10 seats. Sanjay is elected in Amethi (both brothers, Sonia and currently Rahul held or hold that riding), so how long before she hands over, voluntarily or otherwise?

She wouldn't have relinquished power, certainly not in the time before her death. The Congress is a monarchy; monarchs rarely voluntarily abdicate.

Sanjay was the only one to whom she would have voluntarily relinquished the PMO. Especially given the psychological hold he had over his mother, as Frank exquisitely documents in Indira.

You're right about the INC, but apart from Sanjay, the dynasty has always produced worthy scions for the prime ministership.

That depends on what you mean by worthy, doesn't it? The fact that Rajiv did fine suggests to me that the only thing that makes a good Prime Minister is the lack of active malice (which Sanjay had in plenty, of course).

Yup and Rahul Gandhi will be the next PM of India. Count on it. He just recently got arrested for helping farmers who were leading an agitation. He will definitely win.
