Five counties in Mass.:

Bristol, Essex, Norfolk, Plymouth, Worcester

swung to Bush by a margin greater than the national average

Does anyone now why? Was there an anti-Kerry backlash?

Kerry won a slightly smaller % than Gore in just two of those counties: Bristol and Plymouth.

The change in Bristol county (mostly ethnic working class, although with a few suburbs) was mostly the result of a higher Republican turnout, Kerry still landslided the county.

Plymouth is a Republican county (except for Brockton), and there seems to have been a better GOP turnout in the more affluent areas along the coast.
