I assume it's people who are ignoring the race but have pre-conceived notions of Trump as a socially liberal New Yorker.  Also, based on Huckabee leading among conservative GOP, I'm guessing most people use social issues as their measure for how "conservative" they are.

You need to reread Tender Branson's guidelines for posting polls.  Don't post polls without giving the topline results.  Wink

Trump and Huckabee are tied for the lead in Gallup's national GOP primary poll:

Differences by ideology:

Trendline without Trump:

And interestingly, PPP's polls don't really show any ideological split on Trump within the GOP.  He does about as well with conservatives as moderates.  Though he does overperform among birthers.

I'm surprised that more moderates/liberal support Palin than do conservatives.

Going by their numbers without Trump, it looks like most of the major candidates are in decline. Gingrich, especially, is looking like he might actually fall behind Paul. Palin has been slumping too (apparently because Bachmann is looking like a better option), and Romney would appear to be declining slightly too. The only candidates near the top who aren't falling are Huckabee (who is rising, but still doesn't seem especially inclined to a run) and Paul (who has been holding relatively steady for the past while).

Actually, none of the changes seem particularly significant. No one really seems to be going anywhere. Which might explain why Trump could get in and gain a lot of voters.

It's within the margin of error...
