I posted earlier that the candidates were Spiro Agnew, Ronald Reagan, John Ashbrook, Pete McCloskey, and Howard Baker. I contemplated having Nixon run again, but decided he would be too busy wallowing in self-pity. I put Baker in because I thought that the Agnew-Reagan-Ashbrook-McCloskey field wasn't large enough with just two candidates having a viable chance at gaining the nod.

Also, I hope the Republicans don't end up screwed where Democrats get four straight terms, then the Republicans win in 1976 and because of the economy go down in flames in 1980, where the Democrats re-instate their rule, possibly for twelve years.

BREAKING: PRESIDENT KENNEDY SHOT AT RALLY IN MARYLAND

Assassin Arther Bremer has shot President Kennedy five times. Kennedy has been transported to a hospital in Laurel, the city where the rally was located, and Bremer was apprehended by police. There is no word on the severity of President Kennedy's condition or on the motives of the assassin. More to come later....

UPDATE: We can confirm that the President *is* alive but is in critical condition and may have life-altering spinal trauma...we also have word that would-be assassin Arther Bremer shot the President due to a want for fame.

President Kennedy defeated Wallace in Maryland and Michigan by crushing margins. Out of courtesy, Wallace dropped out of the race and gave a preliminary endorsement of the Democratic ticket in 1972.

Baker and Reagan continue to fight it our for the nomination, while Agnew, save for a victory in Pennsylvania, remains neglected by the voters. Baker has hit it off with voters in the Northeast, while Reagan is doing well in the Midwest. Agnew hopes to make a comeback in the South on May 4, mainly in the North Carolina contest. McCloskey and Ashbrook both sat out the contests in Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Ohio.

It's plausible, because IRL Nixon, who was pretty liberal, only chose Agnew to balance the ticket and serve as an attack dog for his opponents. Besides, they would probably turn to someone well known enough to stop Reagan, because McCloskey just isn't that person.
