Tough call, but 20RP12 because at least his social policy mirrors Obama's (I think).

Not technically the same thing. Social libertarians and social liberals usually disagree on a number of issues, eg gun rights/control, hate crimes, preference for issues to be solved a federal vs. state level (ie gay marriage often, abortion sometimes), affirmative action, addressing global warming/climate change, etc. They come from different places philosophically as well, to the extent that social liberalism has a philosophy, that is.

No, no.  Disagreeing with far left social liberalism does not mean you are not socially liberal.   If he is libertarian, he is socially liberal in spectrum; even if some issues are not full on left.

If you choose to view it only as a left-right thing, fine, but it's an oversimplification that hides the fact that they come from different places philosophically. Extreme social liberalism and extreme social libertarianism will end you up in two different places, though there are a lot of similarities between the two concepts.

Yes, and extreme followers of different types of socialism end up in different places.  Are they not all generally in the same quadrant of beliefs?

A social liberal and social "libertarian" (which I am still not convinced does truly exist on its own) have more in common than a social libertarian and social conservative or a social conservative and social liberal, which is what whathisface was falsely LOLOLOLOLing about.

Social conservatives and "social liberals" have far more in common than social libertarians do with either.

A social libertarian opposes:

Hate crime laws
"Hate speech" laws
Laws against prostitution
Drug prohibition (including "regulating and taxing" drugs)
Having the state involved in marriage at all
The draft
Employment discrimination laws
Anti-discrimination laws in general
Gun control laws
"Humanitarian intervention"
Foreign aid

etc. etc. etc.

All of those things are either supported by a clear majority of self-described "social liberals," or receive more support from "social liberals" than "social conservatives."

A much better way to look at it would be "social left-right" ("traditional values" vs. "cosmopolitan" worldview) combined with "social libertarian-authoritarian."

Social left-libertarian:

Mike Gravel, Gary Johnson, Barry Goldwater, Napoleon, reason magazine

Social left-authoritarian:

Chuck Schumer, Hillary Clinton, Tipper Gore, Polnut, Time magazine

Social right-libertarian:

Ron Paul, Robert Taft, Calvin Coolidge, Ghost_white, LewRockwell.com

Social right-authoritarian:

Dubya, Woodrow Wilson, John McCain, realisticidealist, Fox News
