How come we have no thread? Milan, Turin, Napels, Bologna,... All elect mayors and city councils today.

If my Italian isn't too rusty, I seem to understand that the municipalities up for election tonight are currently divided as follows:

Left: 1
Centre-Left: 71
Centre: 2
Centre-Right: 53
Civic List (?): 3
Lega Nord: 1

I'm out of touch with Italian politics, but the PD should be up and the PDL down, no?

Depends on when these places were last up. If they were last up in 2006, the left should be down a bit.

Bologna seems to have last been up in 2009, while Milan last was up in 2006. But again, my Italian is poor (i.e. what I recognize from French/Latin).

EDIT: Yeah, terms seem to be variable.

I've not followed the trends closely (because that would mean depression for me), but Berluscock is only slightly unpopular in these days (after all, poor guy is the victim of a conspiracy of communist judges). While the Lega is still at record highs. If the general elections were held today, the center-left would only narrowly prevail, despite all the vote splitting from Fini, Casini, and all the useless guys.

exit poll sez left leads right by one point in Milan with a runoff, the left wins Turin and will probably have to wait for a runoff in Bologna. The right will probably gain Naples.

Berlusconi should give some piece of advice to DSK on how to keep on winning (or not really losing) elections while in some political quagmire Tongue

Probably one of the few countries (with the US Tongue) where I'd vote for the left without great hesitation...

Well, if the right loses Milan this will be certainly a good election. But I've learnt from Italian politics that hope is often followed by depression ("prima illuso, poi deluso", we say). So, let's see.

If someone wants to follow the results : http://amministrative.interno.it/

Naples
Milan
Turin

Seems to be pretty awesome numbers for the left. Let's hope they hold on until the runoff.

So far,amazing elections.
I won't comment on the big cities since everyone knows the results (PdL'scurrent mayor at 41% in Milan! PD getting more votes than PdL!!!!), but PdL+Lega are also losing a lot of small towns in the "deep North",like Veneto and Lombardia, where they used to win with ridicolous results.
Anyway, the decisive battle will be in 2 weeks.

The left didn't have to wait for a run-off in Bologna: they got it w/ 50.46%. The rest of the big ones not yet complete, but it looks like left leads right more by 6-7% in Milan.

Also in Naples, things don't seem as safe for the right. The main right-wing candidate won 39%, but the two left-wing candidates got 47% in total. So, let's see.

And yeah, it was a great night, but I don't want to be too hopeful because there are still 2 weeks to go to the runoff.

I don't think the Right should be expecting a good weekend with these runoffs. Unless some dynamics have changed, I say Pisapia will take Milan (which would have been unthinkable just a few weeks ago) and I'm not sold on the PdL taking Naples (which should have been a sure thing for us). IdV making it into the runoff and Lettieri's very weak showing in the first round are enough reasons to be worried.

Maybe Silvio will realize his antics didn't help for once. I'm not holding my breath though.

When will the results be in and where can I get them.  I cannot stand Berlusconi and if there was a centrist option or even slightly left of centre, I would hope they would win, but considering the fiscal situation if it also applies to municipalities, it seems like the left winning would be a bad thing.

Center-left wins Milan with 55% and Naples with 65%!
Also wins in plenty of other cities such as Trieste and Cagliari (where there have been center-right mayors since after WW2)
This is incredible!!!

I know this outcome was more than possible, but stil :

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah ! Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Pisapia with 55% ? De Magistris with 65% ? That's just too beautiful to be true ! Smiley This is a great day for Italy, it seems like people have finally waken up and that 17 years of stupidity are about to end ! I've never been so hopeful since a long time.

Naples isn't any more liberal than any other big city.
And recently the center-right was winning handily (last year they won the Province with more than 60% of the vote) both there and in the whole region.

To win,and to win with 65%,is something absolutely amazing. I'm gonna go celebrate in a couple of hours Cheesy

Only sad news is that the PD is still a joke and Bersani has the charisma of a wet pizza. But who cares ? The left has proven it can win (and win even better) without the PD's lead.

Naples is quite capable of voting strongly for Leftists, and also for non-DC Rightists, but "liberal"? That sounds... just wrong. Very very wrong. Even in the American sense.
