looking at the polls, it appears that the caucusgoers are the sort of Republicans you would find west of the 93rd meridian, east of the 96th meridian, south of the 38th parallel and north of the 36th parallel.

When I think of Iowa republicans I think of someone like Bob Ray (governor of Iowa in the 70s), Jim Leach or Greg Ganske.

Because its the 2000's, not the 70's. Social conservatives began to dominate the IA GOP long ago. Remember Pat Robertson finished a strong second in the caucuses as long ago as 88, against a sitting VP no less.
