1999 wasn't very bad, all things considered.

2001 was much scarier, even if smaller.

It seems there were a lot of anarchist types who showed up before the game even ended with gas canisters, incendiary devices, crowbars, etc. Watch some of the video and you'll find guys with bandanas covering their faces and big backpacks on. Definitely didn't show up for the hockey game.

A lot of the hockey watchers got into it once it started of course but it seems from my observation that the instigators had a political motive and were just trying to take advantage of an agitated crowd.

The story now is apparantly the girl had just been whacked by a police officer and her boyfriend was trying to comfort her as she lay on the ground injured. The film footage attached to the article seems to bare that out.

I was in Vancouver for the weekend, and it was nice to see all the people signing the boarded up windows. I probably should have myself.
