He was never good at actually passing legislation, what's he going to do now? What purpose does he now serve?

good background reading on the subject

Oh, I thought you were pushing for him past that!

Yes, him staying in his seat until 2012, when he'll lose the game of musical chairs, is what every calculative Democrat should probably hope for.

I think that's a fairly solid position to hold.

(of course, if the courts were to draw or affect the seat in the redistricting process...)

Yes, he is a habitual abuser of the spirit of the half plus seven law.

He's 46, so his lower limit is 30. His wife is 34.

Stories of him going after young interns go back a while, but it's not proven, I think

The Republican party thanks you for your efforts, BRTD.

Y'all might be better off if Weiner didn't resign immediately.

A Republican friend of mine suggested that the GOP should "wait for the perp walk; then blitz 11."

That's my point.

Ohh, whoops. I wrongly assumed you were thanking him for doing his part to keep it in the negative news cycle, harming Weiner, haha

Ah, then our differences are more nuanced! Wink

I think whether or not he resigns might depend on how much the media continues to swarm him in the next few days -- so being in the center of a crazy news cycle swarm now almost counts against him being in a steady news cycle swarm in the long run, if that makes sense?

Indeed. I think it might help to remember that Weiner wasn't exactly a liberal saint in public office either. On Israel, transportation issues, and campaign ethics, some liberals might see some flaws as well?

Yeah, it's time. I personally don't feel like he's done anything worth resigning over but at this point I just want the distraction to go away. Sure it's hypocritical for him to resign and not Vitter, but life's not fair.

I also don't really understand why some Democrats here are getting so upset about this; the entire affair is meaningless in terms of pushing our agenda and enacting policy. He's a liability who can't contribute anything to the party at this point. Cut him loose.

I guess there's some anger at the hypocrisy. At the point that Jefferson was caught with $30k in his freezer, Pelosi only asked him to resign from his committee, not altogether, I think.  And Charlie Rangel has committed sins of public office as well, but he had more friends.

Of course, Weiner allowed this to become a tabloid mega-scandal because of many of his own actions.
