Let's say that Indira Gandhi decides to hold the election in March 1976, on time. At this time the Emergency was still popular, so she wins a third term in a landslide +/- 10 seats. Sanjay is elected in Amethi (both brothers, Sonia and currently Rahul held or hold that riding), so how long before she hands over, voluntarily or otherwise?

Sanjay was the only one to whom she would have voluntarily relinquished the PMO. Especially given the psychological hold he had over his mother, as Frank exquisitely documents in Indira.

You're right about the INC, but apart from Sanjay, the dynasty has always produced worthy scions for the prime ministership.
