I just looked through the Clark County Population estimates and found this:

2010 estimate for Enterprise: 171.000

http://www.clarkcountynv.gov/Depts/comprehensive_planning/demographics/Documents/PlacePopulation.pdf

2010 census result: 109.000

http://2010.census.gov/2010census/popmap

What is going on there ? Could there be a massive undercount or is it the housing crisis ?

Extrapolating expectations of high growth from time t to t+1. Nothing more.

Another interesting fact about Enterprise:

It's the place with the most Asians in Nevada at 21% of the total population, up from 5% in 2000.

2010: 109.000 x 0.21 = 23.000 Asians

2000: 15.000 x 0.05 = 800 Asians

Within a decade, the number of Asians in Enterprise rose from 800 to 23.000 !!!

What kind of Asians do you think live there ?

US Asians or Chinese investors who purchased houses there ?

Asians tend to congregate in the same areas. Certain areas of California (where I live included) are very Asian; I suspect the same factors are at play here.

Yup. Enormous boom town, very hard to estimate the actual population. They probably were trying to estimate the population from the number of habitable residences--but of course a lot of houses were built and then never occupied due to the housing crisis.

I´ve just looked up the numbers.

The Census counted 49.600 houses in Enterprise, of which 19.6% were vacant.

That means 39.900 houses were occupied. The total population was 109.000, which further means 2.73 persons in every occupied house.

If every house (incl. the vacant ones) housed 2.73 people on average, the population would still be only 135.400 - which is still about 40.000 away from the 2010 estimate of Clark County.

That either means there was a massive undercount or that Clark County got the estimated amount of houses built in Enterprise completely wrong.

In fact, Clark County estimated that there would be about 13.000 more houses built than the Census actually found.

Talk about a flawed construction registry (if there even is one) ...

It's possible, maybe even likely, that work permits were filed, including completion dates, but work was never begun because the housing market crashed out. There are also a lot of parts of Clark County that have roads all laid out and parcels subdivided, but no homes were ever built because of the crash.

Given the rapid growth of Clark County before 2006, they might not have an easy way to expunge permits for construction that never occurs (because previously nearly all construction that was planned actually took place).

I bet a lot of them are Filipinos, with a good amount of Chinese as well. And yes they would tend to be US permanent residents or citizens, more than in California for example.
