Democtratic Underground has tons of females on their site and yet it tough to find one that active post here. What is the beef with females and political sites? Some forums have tons of females and then the number shrinks on other forums such as this and Free Republic.

It's because most political sites have tons of insecure idiot males on them.

DU has tons of idiot people on the fourm, doesn't stop them gaining female members.

Read my edit. A lot of it has to do with the ideology of the site's posters.

Also, let's face it, political/election analysis is very nerdy stuff. People who obsess over this stuff tend to be male. Tongue

I just read your edit. You are forgetting about the number of big names in the Tea Party are female. Why would libertarianism not attract females? It's not like progressives such as me, opebo, and BRTD are any better at bring females to the forum.

"creepy" is often just a word used to shame men for normal sexual desires.

Normal for this forum isn't exactly normal anywhere else.

I don't see how young mens' desire for females is abnormal, even on this forum. Just because some here may be nerdier than average, does not make their desires unnatural. Obviously they just need to look somewhere else. Like the royal wedding magazines section.

The problem is that there aren't a lot of young men here that are creepy. And the females have been much younger.

Posting about erotic massages and sharing strippers with other men isn't very normal.

Probably. I'm sure feminists are very appreciative of threads about prostitutes too.

I'm on the trans spectrum as it is so I could easily just decide to present as female if you think that would help.

Texasgurl left? Sad

I'm sure there's possibly few females around, among the crowd of assorted sporadic posters who don't post in the off-topic forums. I'm not sure I would post my gender if I was female, what with the potential for scary creeper internet stalking and whatnot.

Not sure if I detect sarcasm here. If so, I'm used to it. (Though in this particular instance I was in part being snide to begin with, since a lot of you guys are kind of acting like jerks about this.)

With regards to Atlas, this is the definitive thread on that topic:

https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=115102.0

This post by Beet I think is especially good:

Well, places usually grow by word of mouth or by advertising. In first person shooter forums for example, the advertising is the game, which men and women both see in stores, and is played by so many men that some women are bound to come into contact with it, try it, and like it enough to post in a forum. With other political sites that I go to, they tend to be well known, or the people in them started out drawn together as a group in real life that expanded into a online group, kind of like phknrocket1k was saying. Groups in real life tend to be mixed gender, so when translated online, it became that way as well.

This site is a place where you aren't going to find it unless you go searching. We're not tied to any particular famous events or personalities. Dave doesn't have a blog that attracts many links or hits to this site. We get a traffic surge around election day just for people looking for information, IIRC, but it mostly hangs beneath the surface. People have made friends here but it's relatively rare for existing members to bring in their friends or family. Statesrights is one of the exceptions and the result that was one of our few female members.

In other words, this site is designed very much as a social networking island. It's unusually disconnected. I'm not sure that answers the OP's question but I think it has something to do with it.

Well the main gateway, if you will, to this site is the map collection. As someone who has several bookshelves/a personal library heavily dedicated to maps, old road atlases and related things, I can say that most like minded people who've been into maps are usually male.

Women usually have more interest in activism and the more social aspects of politics, frequently they're just as knowledgeable as men but express the interest differently. In the age of web 2.0/"the social internet" our late 90's looking message board is kind of retro.

It's also important to remember that people we think we know aren't always who they say there are. Most people accepted that Boss Tweed was 35 or whatever, until he admitted to be about 13. So who's to say a well known poster isn't a female and just doesn't mention it, so as not to get the negative attention.
