I never raise the topic in normal conversation, but if somebody else does (and it wouldn't make things awkward), then I don't mind getting involved.

So Option 4.

Yeah, quite a bit. Most of my friends are pretty political and read the news a lot, so it's a frequent topic of conversation.

I tend to watch the news socially, either with friends or with my mother when I'm visiting home, so option 1.

I'm actually pretty active within local Republican and conservative circles, so I have many opportunities to talk with others about politics. An interesting discussion that will soon emerge is the 2012 Senate race, a race I differ from many of my political friends.

Yeah, that's my problem, it often does......so when clients bring it up, which they do often, I stay away.  Mrs. M3PRP and I talk about it.....but most of my friends aren't much into it.

Between 2 and 3.  I went with 3.  Even my own family and friends are polarized.  I got everything from ultra-bleeding hearts to Fox News watchers.  Try to avoid controversies, but know who I can say what to.

Not at all. Mostly I talk about football or school or things like that. I'll talk about baseball when there's someone to discuss it with me. I spend most of my time thinking about baseball.

First option. I'm mouthy and opinionated. But I try to not impose it on people.

Close to this, though I've calmed in recent years.

Not really. The huge liberal majority at my university intimidates me and my family is fairly apolitical. Wink

Almost none, though I have been trying to get it down to none. It can be a difficult temptation to fight, though.

I sometimes discuss it with friends. I am by far the most leftwing of them though.

(Well, depending on how you define 'friends', I know this commie guy quite well, but I don't believe we've ever discussed politics)

All the time.

About half the conversations I have with my dad are good-spirited political debates. My brother and some apolitical friends often ask me for explanations of things (e.g., "What does the debt ceiling mean?" or, "Why does the news care so much about Iowa?"). My extended family on my dad's side is extremely political and highly opinionated, with greatly varying ideologies, so politics is generally default dinner conversation. A lot of my closer friends, from high school and especially college, are also extremely political.

I remember some great drunken debates with my fraternity brothers; almost everyone voted for Obama (except one guy, pre-law, southern to the bone with a Confederate flag hanging on his dorm wall, who surprisingly voted for the Socialist Workers Party ticket), but there was a notable divide between the leftists and the pro-business social liberals that always came up whenever something like unions, healthcare, or taxes came up.

But I'll honestly talk politics with anyone, if it's invited. For example, I had a great conversation just a few hours ago with a Peruvian guy who works with a friend of mine. I now understand the anti-Humala sentiment among Peruvian expats in the US firsthand. Grin

I'm in politics so yeah, I talk about it quite a bit. I don't bring it up with non-political friends unless it's something directly related to work or stuff I'm involved in. If anything, my friends and family bring it up because they know I'm involved and were used to me talking about it all of the time when I was younger. I think they see it as an obligation to ask me about stuff when I frankly couldn't care less to have a political discussion.

I mention Soccer way more than anything political anyway.

Other than trading gabs with my super-Republican extended family, not terribly much.
