What if Gore had won the election? what would America be like? what about the midterms? legislation? foreign policy? and most importantly, would 9/11 happen? Your questions are answered as we examine the presidency of Al Gore.

November 2000- Al Gore wins the presidency with 292-246 Electoral Votes.

Early 2001- Gore announces a new education bill. OTL "No Child Left Behind", but about 25% more money. Passed in both the House ans Senate and signed into law.

Mid 2001- Gore announces a re-deployment of American troops from Europe to the US. Troops in Korea stay.

9/11/01- The September 11th disaster. Two planes crash into the WTC destroying them. A group of Muslim extremists are caught with box cutters on an aircraft in Washington DC. Too late to stop Flight 93 from smashing into the US Capitol Bldg. Few deaths occur in the capitol due to evacuations. In total approximately 2800 deaths occur in the 9/11 attacks.

Fall 2001- US Intelligence discovers the Al Qaeda organization to be responsible for the 9/11 disaster.  President Gore leads a NATO attack on Afghanistan.  Many terror training camps are discovered but Bin laden isn't found by Christmas.

Winter 2001-2002
NATO troops continue to scour Afghanistan for Al Qaeda members. Mullah Omar is caught in Eastern Arghanistan in January. President Gore focuses his State of the Union address on Terrorism and the enviroment. Announces in February America is signing the Kyoto Accords.

Early 2002- North Korea starts saber rattling on the Korean Peninsula. President Gore orders another brigade to Korea along with a fighter wing to Japan. Talks continue, but no agreement is in sight.

Mid 2002- President Gore orders an economic stimulus plan to be inacted.  A small tax cut (about 50% OTL 2001 Cuts) is put in place. President Gore also prepares an enviromental protection bill. It is battled over all summer and leads to a great divide. Senator Jeffords declares himself an independent and caucauses with the Democrats. Senate is 50-50 Democrats with VP Lieberman breaking the tie.

Fall 2002- NATO troops still cannot find Bin Laden. He is believed to have gone to Iran with Atef and Zawahiri. We still haven't captured any senior Al Qaeda.

November Elections- GOP loses 2 seats in the House, but gains a Senate seat. The Senate is now Republican 51-49.

Winter 2002- North Korea displays a IRBM at a Pyongyang parade. The US goes nuts and orders North Korea to disarm. North Korea thumbs their noses and walk away from the negotiating table. Secretary of State Biden travels to Pakistan to meet with President Musharraf. As they meet at his official residence, Islamic militants attack the compound. Secretary Biden is taken hostage. After two weeks of searching, militants display a video of the execution of Secretary Biden on an Islamic website. North korea quickly retreats into the background.

Early 2003- President Gore orders Pakistan to allow us access to the border regions near Afghanistan. They relent in March and order 30,000 Pakistanis and 5,000 Americans into the region. The beginning of the "Tribal Uprising". Tribal leaders order their fighters to go into hiding much like the Iraq situation today, except on a smaller scale.

Mid 2003- Enviromental protection bill is reintroduced. Another 3 months of debates follow. Republican senators filibuster the bill and refuse to let it come to vote. Senator Chafee defects to the Democrats giving them the Senate, 50-50 with Lieberman breaking the tie.Justice John Paul Stevens announces his retirement from the Supreme Court. Gore announces ACLU Legal Director Scott Shapiro will be the nominee.

Fall 2003- Senate battle over Enviroment Protection Bill and nomination of Shapiro. In September, the GOP cuts a deal to pass the EP Bill if Gore withdraws Shapiro's name from consideration. The EP Bill passes narrowly and Gore nominates Drew Days to be the new Justice. He is confirmed in exchange for Democrat support for the Homeland Safety Department. Gore appoints General Wesly Clark to head the Department. "Tribal Uprising" reaches 100 American dead and a total of 300 Americans have died in the fight against terror. Pressure from peace groups mounts to get US troops out. Howard Dean and Dennis Kucinich announce they will challenge Gore for the nomination. Republican candidates include Senator Bill Frist, Governor Bill Owens of Colorado, Governor Jeb Bush of Florida, and New York Governor George Pataki.

Winter 2003- Saddam Hussein fires three SAMs at a F-15 fighter over northern Iraq. The fighter is shot down, but the pilot ejects near Mosul. A rescue team is dispatched and gets into a gun fight with Iraqi Army personell. President Gore hesitates before sending in fighter jets to attack nearby bases. The result is fifteen dead Americans and over 100 dead Iraqis. Saddam issuesa condemnation of the "Unprovoked American Attack". Republicans call for a UN Resolution condemning Saddam and sanctions to be put in place. This goes no where fast. In February, a Massachusets court legalizes same-sex marriage in Massachusets. Conservatives go crazy and condemn the "activist courts". The Iowa caucus and NH primary result in slight Gore wins, with the combined Gore-Kucinich total larger than Gore's total. Gov. Owens wins in Iowa and New Hampshire and begins to pull away from Pataki, Bush, and Frist.

Spring 2004- Gore secures the nomination, but Dennis Kucinich announces a run on the Democratic Peace ticket in the fall. The Republicans solidify behind Governor Owens and in mid June he picks Senator Frist as his running mate. The remaining spring sees mounting casualties in Waziristan and cooling of relations with Iraq. Gore orders redeployed air wings to Saudi Arabia and begins ever growing air patrols over Iraq.

Summer 2004- Governor Owens keeps the race with President Gore close and by August pulls even with Gore. The RNC and DNC produce bounces for both candidates and the race stays even going into the debates. Big issues are health care, the recession, and the "Tribal War".

Fall 2004
The first debate is a massive win for Owens and he gains a 10 point lead over Gore. The next to debates are small Gore wins, but he manages to only pull within 4 points by election day.

Election 2004
Governor Owens takes 273 electoral votes to Gore's 265. The race looks close but Owens won 49-44 with Kucinich winning 7 percent. Republicans win another Senate seat giving the GOP a 51-49 lead. The House stays GOP slightly.
