Is there anything Obama won't cave on? Would he do a minstrel show if the GOP said that he should?

Why didn't they just initially schedule it for the following week? Were his staffers really not cognizant of the debate? Now they lose the fight and Packers-Saints will siphon away viewers from the PR stunt.

He didn't really have a choice.  The self invitation was wrong and stupid.

The game is scheduled to start at 8:30, my guess is Obama will start at 7 or 7:30 and finish by game time.  NBC (and NBC's advertisers) will still be furious that they only get ~30 minutes before kickoff to celebrate the season and get easy ratings, but as a viewer I can live with that.

Whether it is the White House's incompetence or Boehner being a jerk by agreeing to Wednesday and then reneging, Obama shouldn't have gone up against the Republican debate.  He pretty clearly "started it" and lost.  Now the Republican candidates get to joke about his failure on national television and a bunch of people excited for football are going to have politics injected into their fun.  And if Obama does all this for "we're going to rebuild our nation's infrastructure" it'll just be sad.

or maybe the POTUS shouldn't have waited 32 months into his term before focusing on jobs

or maybe Obama should have come back from vacation a few days earlier.

or maybe he should have given the speech from the White House instead of from a joint session of Congress.  Could have done it Wednesday then.

It is fair to criticize Obama and he has deserved some of his "too weak" criticism but whining over a date?

I heard somewhere that the House asked Obama to delay his speech by a day to avoid the conflict.

This is what's most baffling to me. Just do an address from the Oval and avoid the whole damn controversy.

I'm not criticizing him for "weakness."

I'm criticizing him for his stupid and crass "self invitation," and for at least looking like he was thinking "I'm POTUS!  I'm supreme!  Everyone else bow to slightest whim."  It was really stupid, on several levels.

When has a president ever had any qualms about addressing congress when he felt like it?

how many joint sessions of Congress can you address before it becomes a nonevent?
i'd say Obama's already reached saturation here.

Other than his SOTU (and unofficial SOTU in 2009), this will be his second one.

It better not interrupt the football game.  I mean we have to get our priorities straight, here.  A football game that will provide more significance than the empty words that are likely to come out of the Presidents mouth.

Whenever that president was stupid enough to make the announcement prior to announcing it.

Why is the debate such a big f-ing deal?  I wasn't aware the President had to organize his schedule around the activities of candidates running for his job.

Haha, I love it (aside from it interrupting Football)! The President makes a really classless move, gets called out and told to reverse the decision and does just that! Can we just tell him not to run for re-election while we're at it? Wait. Scratch that. He's making it easy for us.

To use TR's words about William McKinley, this guy has the backbone of a chocolate eclair (no pun intended).

I love the GOP.  Lying about WMDs is okay, but a scheduling conflict is where you have to draw the line.
