"HIGH SCHOOL -- 1955 vs. 2011"

Scenario 1: Jack goes quail hunting before school and then pulls into the school parking lot with his shotgun in his truck's gun rack.
1955 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack...
2010 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers.

Scenario 2: Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school.
1955 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.
2010 - Police called and SWAT team arrives -- they arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged with assault and both expelled even though Johnny started it.

Scenario 3: Jeffrey will not be still in class, he disrupts other students.
1955 - Jeffrey sent to the Principal's office and given a good paddling by the Principal. He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.
2010 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin He becomes a zombie. He is then tested for ADD... The school gets extra money from the state because Jeffrey has a disability.

Scenario 4: Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.
1955 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college and becomes a successful businessman.
2010 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse. Billy is removed to foster care and joins a gang. The state psychologist is told by Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison.. Billy's mom has an affair with the psychologist.

Scenario 5: Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.
1955 - Mark shares his aspirin with the Principal out on the smoking dock..
2010 - The police are called and Mark is expelled from school for drug violations... His car is then searched for drugs and weapons.

Scenario 6: Pedro fails high school English.
1955 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English and goes to college.
2010 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist.. ACLU files class action lawsuit against the state school system and Pedro's English teacher.. English is then banned from core curriculum.. Pedro is given his diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.

Scenario 7: Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed.
1955 - Ants die.
2010 - ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism.. The FBI investigates his parents --and all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are confiscated. Johnny's dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.

Scenario 8: Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him.
1955 - In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.
2010 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy

This is a rather infamous internet chain email I found. Now I understand if liberals say, "Tsk, tsk, yeah it's a crazy world...." but if they become defensive, then that makes me assume they believe that the crazy world we live in today is not only necessary but is actually better than the old days, which is quite scary, IMO.

It's an over-simplification largely, but I actually do agree with the underlying message.....for the most part.

Because all of those things are true in every (or even in most!) high school both then and now. Roll Eyes

This is the second most idiotic thing I have ever read (your post on hip hop was the first).  You cannot actually believe this rubbish, right?

No it's not an accurate description of then or now....but I think the general point is somewhat valid.

People do get hysterical over unimportant thing these days. And I'd say he's correct that that's a lot more common now than then.

These statements are ridiculous. Only numbers one and two are actually plausible. Scenario 8 doesn't even concern high school. There is no recess... what kind of sixteen year old would cry after scraping their knee? Roll Eyes

Scenario 9 -- Johnny is molested by his track and field coach, Father Maxie
1955: Walk it off and be a man.  Besides, if anybody found out, that would make you a sissy boy
2010: Track coach goes to jail.

This is fun.

You have to remember that Naso went to high school online and never learned what happened in high school outside of the Breakfast Club, which was a movie set in what appeared to be recess.

I give this thread 4.5 out of 5 stars.  Minus 0.5 as Naso is obviously trolling us here.

1955- A black kid comes onto the school campus, is beaten and spitten on by several angry white boys.  The school staff and the police do nothing.

2011-Black kid able to go to school.

Yes, but this was to prevent promotion of hip-hop culture and not any sort of prejudice.

Or alternatively, nothing happens, because no one has any inclination to search Jack's car.

Scenario 2: Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school.
1955 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.
2010 - Police called and SWAT team arrives -- they arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged with assault and both expelled even though Johnny started it.Or alternatively, nothing happens, because it's after school and the school administration has no authority over them outside of school hours.

The school gets extra money from the state because Jeffrey has a disability.Or, alternatively, he gets a detention in a week or so and goes back to class.

Billy's mom has an affair with the psychologist.Or, alternatively, nothing happens, again.

Scenario 5: Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.
1955 - Mark shares his aspirin with the Principal out on the smoking dock..
2010 - The police are called and Mark is expelled from school for drug violations... His car is then searched for drugs and weapons.Or, alternatively, nothing happens. Who would want to search Mark?

Scenario 6: Pedro fails high school English.
1955 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English and goes to college.
2010 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist.. ACLU files class action lawsuit against the state school system and Pedro's English teacher.. English is then banned from core curriculum.. Pedro is given his diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.WTF?

Scenario 7: Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed.
1955 - Ants die.
2010 - ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism.. The FBI investigates his parents --and all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are confiscated. Johnny's dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.Or, alternatively, Johnny gets some extra credit in Science for his home experiment.

Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.Or, alternatively, nothing happens.

I'm pretty sure the world today is much better than the one in 1955. And before I become a liberal, keep in mind I entered politics in 2007 as a fervent supporter of John McCain.

Let's try some non-fictional stories:

1955: Elizabeth Eckford, a star student, transfers into Central High School.

Wow, the good old days were swell.

This one is annoying not because of any political issues here, but because it's completely ignorant of the state of English Language Learner education in the 1950s vs. today. Pedro would have dropped out of school in 1955 if he'd made it as far as high school without speaking English, and no one would have cared. His teacher wouldn't have even known how to reach him or had time to do so.

But she was bringing in hip-hop culture!  It wasn't about race!

Scenario #9:  Michael has had a long frustrating day
1955- Michael meets friends after school at the local malt shoppe and forgets his troubles.
2011- Michael goes on the internet.  He proceeds to piss and moan and pines for a time that never existed.

Scenario #379: Cheating

1955: There's a history test coming up in school. Fred, who isn't really good in this subject, asks that geeky but smart and not too bad looking girl in his class for advice. She agrees and teaches him the questions. Fred later asks her out for a date and a few more. They marry, have 6 children and 18 grandchildren, they are still alive and mostly well and now retired in Arizona.

2011: There's a history test coming up in school. Fred, who isn't really good in this subject, asks his friend Cheung Li if he can help him. Test day arrives: Cheung Li pretends to be sick and stays at home. Slightly ahead of the test, Fred (who has longer hair) puts a small bluetooth headset into his ear, and connects it with his mobile phone situated in his underpants and calls his friend. His friend tells him the answers to some questions. Suddenly the bluetooth headset has a malfunction which produces a schrill sound that leads to Fred having a chronic tinnitus. The cheating is revealed and some girls call him a loser. A few weeks later, Fred jumps off a highway bridge and is dead.

Yes it's true that we have become more....... suspicious of how people act, (In fact any year before 2001 could be placed instead of 1955) but it's not like there's only been bad things...

1955 - 10 year old kids leave house, walk to train tracks and each have a cigarette. All find out later in life that they have lung cancer and die.

2011 - 10 year old kids leave house, walk to skate park and each have a joint. All go to jail for possession and are mercilessly raped by a 42 year old heavy-set man named Molly.

Funniest part about these stereotypes is Naso tying this all into liberalism. As if American politics is more liberal today than it was in 1955, before the Reagan Revolution.
