but if one looks in comparison; the 2004-2010 cycle was the worst decade for incumbents since the 1974-1980 cycle. If gerrymandering is supposed to help incumbents then it sure hasn't worked as much as they thought.

As far as the U.S. House of Representatives is concerned, it's more accurate to say that the politicians choose the voters than the other way around.
