Actually, the evil was just as close as it was on September 10, 2001. We just ignored it before then.

Because the change after 9/11 was all about recession, debates, and political divides.

Maybe we should continue to dedicate ourselves to the fight against the terrorists. Maybe we should give thanks to the fact that we have gone ten years without another attack. Maybe we should do everything we can to make sure that those sacrificed did not die in vain.

Seriously, were his speechwriters actually TRYING to diminish 9/11 as much as they could?

CJK, by writing an list of petty grievances like this, you've done the exact same thing as Krugman. You've taken a day that's supposed to be about what happened 10 years ago and twisted it into some kind of political statement. 9/11 is something that all Americans ought to be able to look at in a non-partisan, non-political fashion. The president's speech, like it or not (and I suspect your problem is more him and less the speech) wasn't in poor taste and wasn't political. It's intentionally vague so as not to be political.

Any time I read a conservative post like this, I remember something a very liberal professor of mine once told me. We had to read some absurd feminist book about how "mammals" are only called that because Linnaeus was obsessed with breasts and write an essay about it. I ruthlessly ripped the author apart. The professor gave me an A- and told me it would have been higher except for one thing: I did the exact same thing as the author. I was unfair in my criticisms and I knew it.

I think you've just done the same here.

I respectfully disagree. Look, I don't agree with every aspect of the Republican critique of Obama. I do not think he is a socialist trying to destroy America. At the same time, though, he has diminished us in every rerspect. That isn't a partisan statement, I read what the left says and they often have just as much frustration with the man as the right.

All kidding aside, the speech was a disgrace and it ruined the 10th anniversary of 9/11. 9/11 wasn't a tragedy, it was a ruthless assault on us by enemies of America. Given that, politics were entirely appropriate, and in no way should those politics have been considered remotely controversial. Yet he actually brought up "recessions" and "political divides". While failing to describe the enemy or describe our response.

Arguably, he even shoe-horned an amnesty agenda with his rhetoric about immigrants. Wildly innapropriate.

Heck, I would have even been happier if he bragged about killing bin Laden. Something to tell us that 9/11 wasn't an earthquake, an attack by racist hicks, or a CIA plot.

How can you possibly defend him honoring mosques on this day in any context, while not mentioning the twisted ideology of the people behind this?

I saw a poll two years ago that said that 1 in 3 Americans could not remember that the Afghan war directly resulted from 9/11. Yet, our "leader" couldn't even muster the slightest effort to remind people that. Instead he mentioned Iraq and Afghanistan in the same breath, thereby furthering the "two wars" meme that he rejected as recently as three years ago. He provided no context for either, embarassingly enough.

Instead, he managed to shoe-horn in his plan to downgrade Afghanistan so he can win in 2012.

He couldn't be bothered to mention the remarkable accomplishment that we have gone 10 years without another attack when people thought it would almost certainly happen again soon.

We did not need poetic nonsense at this occassion. If he was trying to demoralize us, he did an excellent job. Even Jimmy Carter would have been stronger.

Downgraded it to what?  9/10?  9/1-?  Only four Giulianis?

CJK, I actually read your entire post line-by-line. It was stylistically and thematically painful for me to do so, but I had the intention of giving you a complete and comprehensive response.

However, I can't do that. Your entire "analysis" is nothing but an overly critical and senseless harangue that the majority of the time grasps at straws just to attain the vaguest hint of relevance. It's the prosaic equivalent to diarrhea. The worst part is, you're not just making yourself look bad, you're showing a blatant hypocritical disregard for a national tragedy when your first instinct upon hearing words of unity from your commander-in-chief is to pretend like you're critiquing a sixth-grader's writing assignment. The same applies to Bush, or Obama, or anyone.

In fact, in your honor, CJK, allow me to demonstrate how FDR made our country look bad after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor!

Why can't FDR talk about it on the day it happened, huh? and who is he to say which date will live in infamy when it was already the 8th in Japan!?

ACTUALLY Japan doesn't have an Air Force, the planes were piloted by the Naval Air Service making this statement factually inaccurate!!!

Well duh you already said it was a surprise attack Mr. President!!

Why does he drone on and repeat the same thing?!? We get the point!!!

You all get the point. I can't keep on with this because I can't reduce my IQ to this level even if I wanted to.
