OK. The Republican primaries stalemate between Romney and Perry. A third candidate (let's say Paul) holds the balance of power and refuses to drop out. The whole thing goes to the convention. Romney and Perry must compromise, and the candidate both find acceptable is...Arizona Senator, 2008 presidential nominee John McCain. Another acceptable-to-all figure, ex-Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, becomes VP.

Meanwhile, things have gotten worse. Unemployment stands at ~10%. Libya's collapsed into a Somalia-style anarchy/civil war. Some vaguely good news out of Afghanistan, but not good enough to dominate a news cycle.
